Question of the Day - 02 November 2022

Q:

For many years, you regularly reported on the largest hotels in the world. As far as I know, you haven't done so in a long long time. Can you? Please? And tell us how many out of the top 20 are in Las Vegas?

A:

You're right; we lost track of the biggest hotels. The last time we covered it was so long ago, we couldn't find it.

Anyway, here's the updated list for both.

The property with the most rooms in the world is the First World Hotel, the massive resort-casino in Genting Highlands, Malaysia; it boasts 7,351 rooms. Genting also owns Resorts World Las Vegas. For some background on this place, read our QoD about its founder, Lim Goh Tong

In second place is the Venetian-Palazzo pair, with 7,117 rooms and in third is MGM Grand, with 6,852; the MGM is the world's largest hotel in a single building.

The rest of the top ten are: Londoner Macau, (#4) owned by Las Vegas Sands, with 6,007 rooms spread across five hotels; Izmailovo Hotel (#5) in Moscow with exactly 5,000 rooms; Wynn/Encore (#6) with 4,748; Barkhatnie Sezony (#7) in Sochi, situated on the coast of the Black Sea in southwestern Russia with 4,688; Luxor (#8) with 4,407; Mandalay Bay/Delano (#9) with 4,326; and Ambassador City Jomtien (#10) in Pattaya, Thailand, with 4,210 rooms.

As you can see, out of the world's top 10 largest hotels, Las Vegas claims five.

But of the world's 11 through 20 largest hotels, Las Vegas claims eight: Excalibur, 4,032; Aria, 4,004; Caesars Palace, 3,960; Bellagio, 3,933; Circus Circus, 3,767; Shinagawa Prince Hotel, Japan, 3,681; Resorts World Las Vegas, 3,501; Flamingo, 3,460; Atlantis Paradise Island, Bahamas, 3,414; and the Mirage, 3,044.

In all, of the top 20 largest hotels in the world, Las Vegas boasts 13.

    Just wonderin'
Do the other 7 hotels charge resort fees?

    Kevin
I'd be shocked if they didn't. I haven't been to a high quality hotel or resort anywhere in many years that doesn't charge resort fees.

    Employees
A good follow up would be to know how many employees these large Las Vegas resorts have, and how that compares to other large employers such as the school district, UNLV, etc. Thanks for the info!

    Did I miss it?
The question (as printed on the main page) also asked for the "tallest buildings" in the world. Was that part answered and I overlooked it? Thanks.

    ...not always the 'highest'
The 'tallest' building is not always the 'highest'.

    Destination Fee
I stayed at a Hyatt in SF and they charged me a $30 "Destination Fee" , but not a Resort Fee. I am thinking it's their way of not covering the fee for their frequent stay elites that get the resort fee waived, so they called it something else. Unfortunately, I can't verify that as I'm not an elite spender with Hyatt.

    Tallest building
The tallest building in the world is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It's 2,722 feet tall.
