Question of the Day - 22 March 2022

Q:

Who is the largest employer in the Las Vegas Valley?

A:

This is somewhat of a moving target that depends on whether you mean the company with the most employees in the Las Vegas area, or the company headquartered in the Las Vegas area that has the most employees in total, or the company that will have the most employees after all the Monopoly-board transactions are completed.

For example, as far as we're concerned, MGM Resorts is the largest employer in Las Vegas -- and Nevada -- with 75,000 or so on the payroll. But that doesn't include the Cosmopolitan's 5,000, which will be added to MRI's total when the company takes over operations there after its deal with Blackstone closes sometime this year. And it does include the Mirage, which is still an MRI property until the Seminoles/Hard Rock take it over. However, it also includes MRI's seven regional properties outside of Nevada and its international casinos. The number of Las Vegas employees looks like around 50,000; in the end, that still makes it largest in the valley.

Next up is either Caesars Entertainment or the Clark County Unified School District. All told, Caesars employs 55,000, but again, that's across 50 properties it owns and/or operates in more than a dozen states. Without access to the company's payroll records, it would be a task that's beyond the scope of this answer to determine how many work in Las Vegas proper.

We suspect that the Clark County Unified School District, sixth largest in the U.S. with an enrollment of 315,000, has more employees locally than Caesars: 40,000.

Wynn Resorts is probably fourth, with 30,200 worldwide, though only 10,000 or so in Vegas.

The Clark County administration employs around 9,000, UNLV and Metro Police around 5,500 each, and the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada and Southwest Airlines roughly 3,500 apiece.

I'm surprised that Red Rock Resorts (Stations) was not included. An internet search shows about 7,800 employees.

    Good answer
I thought it would be a casino group,MGM didn’t surprise me. MGM was my guess. I was surprised a hospitality a medical group wasn’t a closer runner up. But Las Vegas isn’t known for its hospitals.

    The Airport?
If the question is just about the total number of employees, LAS airport (whatever name you wish to use now) should also be listed.

This may depend on the definition of Las Vegas Valley
...but how many are employed at Nellis AFB?

    airport
To get ticky about it, the airport would have many, but so many of those are contracted workers, e.g. airlines, TSA, concessions, sanitation, engineering, etc.

Big number, but technically who employs whom? And where do they all park? LOL.
