Question of the Day - 09 November 2022

Q:

You report on which buffets in Las Vegas have reopened since COVID subsided. How about a rundown of which ones haven't reopened and never will? Which hotels have replaced their buffets with something else because they're never going to reopen and which buffets (if any) are sitting empty and could reopen one of these days?

A:

This is a pretty tall order.

Only 13 out of a previous total of around 70 buffets have reopened since the shutdown, so checking scores of the rooms is beyond the scope of our current manpower capabilities, even on the phone. It's notoriously difficult to get anyone from food and beverage to pick up a call, even if it rings for 15 minutes at a time (which we admit to sometimes doing, if only to annoy people who might be sitting next to it and trying to ignore it).

But we can say that Station Casinos has indicated in no uncertain terms that their buffets will never open again and they've been taking steps to fill up their buffet spaces with other amenities, mostly food courts (food courts and food halls seem to be the new buffets).

It has also been announced that Caesars and buffets are parting ways; only "two or three" out of the company's several dozen AYCE rooms have or will reopen nationwide and of course, only one, the Bacchanal, has in Las Vegas. The Paris Buffet space, for one, has been completely remodeled out of existence, mostly taken up by Martha Stewart's Bedford restaurant, as well as some fast fooderies.

It's the same with Boyd. Only one of its many pre-COVID buffets, Main Street Station, has reopened. The Gold Coast's space has a  construction wall blocking it off, but there's no sign of activity behind it. The Orleans's buffet, when we last saw it several months ago, was dark, empty, and slightly spooky. While we were standing there, peering in to see if anything had changed since March 2020, a security guard approached and asked what we were doing. "Feeling nostalgic," we said with a shrug.

Whenever anything is announced or we hear that something is starting to happen with a casino buffet space, we always write it up in our Vegas News feature. You can keep an eye on that, though it's rare. If anyone else has info about closed buffets here, we're all ears.

In the meantime, we believe it's safe to assume that the continuing no news is bad news in the Las Vegas all-you-can-eat department.

    Never say never
Never is a long time. I bet some come back, may be a few years when visitors to Las Vegas slows downs and the need to attract people.

    Rampart Buffet
Thanks to the LVA coupons, we went to Summerlin to check out Rampart casino and buffet. Their buffet was recently totally remodeled and very clean with freindly staff and reasonable prices.

    Paris Buffet
Actually, Martha Stewarts at Paris is across the walkway from where the buffet used to be. That being said, if they are not going to open the buffet there, why don't they remove or push back the facade along there to have more room to walk- it's a bottleneck trying to walk through there.

    Aftermath at Paris
You can tell it was quite a buffet. Paris erected a statue to the clean up!

    Wynn
Wynn buffet is open, or was as of a couple weeks ago. Didn't try it.

    Food courts - ugh
Can't agree more with Vegas Dawn. Food courts always remind me of mostly empty failed malls.

    Silverton buffet
I still miss the Friday Seafood buffet at the Silverton with AYCE lobster tails.

    Finally
The only question published in a very long, long time that has relevance and merit!

    Sadly
It's melancholy for me. The old "nostalgic" Vegas of even 10 years ago is now dead. They way the world and our health is playing out. We will never visit Vegas again. Perhaps one day, as angels.

    Hang in there
Don't give up Sally_Ann, things could change for the better if a few places that aren't owned/operated by Caesars, MGM, Station and Boyd (such as the Palms) decide to go their own way and do popular things once again to lure customers. In the meantime consider a visit to Laughlin, it's about 90 minutes drive from Vegas and about 15 years back in the past as far as costs for hotel rooms, meals and casino gambling. It's not the Vegas Strip but you can still have a lot of fun in Laughlin. And there are several terrific restaurants just across the Colorado River in Bullhead City, AZ. Check it out, lots of seniors visit there, as well as families that enjoy the river beaches, boating and other laid-back activities.

    Buffets
When will the bean counters learn that it costs 20 times more to get a patron to return after they've driven them away with their cheapness, than it does to keep them in the first place?

AYCE is still there, if you know where to look
There's one thing that people looking for all-you-can-eat keep overlooking: Rodizio. Galpao Gaucho (Fashion Show Mall) and Pampas (Miracle Mile Shops) are on the Strip, Fogo de Chao isn't too far away, and Texas de Brazil is about a mile south of Mandalay Bay.

    Stations
It seems they just don't like locals anymore. Loved the GRV Sunday Champagne Brunch. Ate, drank and gambled more than I should have on all counts. But alas, I now no longer go in there except for Pizza Rock.

    The M
You failed to mention The M's Studio One buffet, also gone. One of the more expensive buffets, we felt it was well worth the price with AYCD wine, beer or cider, and brewed to order spiked coffees at the humongous dessert bar.
The number of international food offerings had to have been close to that of Caesar's Bacchanal Buffet, if not more, and every bite was delightful. My absolute favorite was the grilled gyro meat carved off the vertical roaster (dinner only).
What made this facility stand out was the *studio* for which it was named, a circular enclosed room inside the buffet with a front stage and taping/broadcast ability. It was supposed to be the site for cooking classes, demonstrations, and guest appearances, but we rarely saw anyone in there doing anything.
