You report on which buffets in Las Vegas have reopened since COVID subsided. How about a rundown of which ones haven't reopened and never will? Which hotels have replaced their buffets with something else because they're never going to reopen and which buffets (if any) are sitting empty and could reopen one of these days?
This is a pretty tall order.
Only 13 out of a previous total of around 70 buffets have reopened since the shutdown, so checking scores of the rooms is beyond the scope of our current manpower capabilities, even on the phone. It's notoriously difficult to get anyone from food and beverage to pick up a call, even if it rings for 15 minutes at a time (which we admit to sometimes doing, if only to annoy people who might be sitting next to it and trying to ignore it).
But we can say that Station Casinos has indicated in no uncertain terms that their buffets will never open again and they've been taking steps to fill up their buffet spaces with other amenities, mostly food courts (food courts and food halls seem to be the new buffets).
It has also been announced that Caesars and buffets are parting ways; only "two or three" out of the company's several dozen AYCE rooms have or will reopen nationwide and of course, only one, the Bacchanal, has in Las Vegas. The Paris Buffet space, for one, has been completely remodeled out of existence, mostly taken up by Martha Stewart's Bedford restaurant, as well as some fast fooderies.
It's the same with Boyd. Only one of its many pre-COVID buffets, Main Street Station, has reopened. The Gold Coast's space has a construction wall blocking it off, but there's no sign of activity behind it. The Orleans's buffet, when we last saw it several months ago, was dark, empty, and slightly spooky. While we were standing there, peering in to see if anything had changed since March 2020, a security guard approached and asked what we were doing. "Feeling nostalgic," we said with a shrug.
Whenever anything is announced or we hear that something is starting to happen with a casino buffet space, we always write it up in our Vegas News feature. You can keep an eye on that, though it's rare. If anyone else has info about closed buffets here, we're all ears.
In the meantime, we believe it's safe to assume that the continuing no news is bad news in the Las Vegas all-you-can-eat department.
