Question of the Day - 12 December 2019

Q:

Do the crosswalk escalators on the Strip require frequent maintenance from the heavy usage from all of us visitors and being outside? It seems like every time we visit there are several closed for repair. Also whose jurisdiction does this fall under?

A:

The escalators that transport pedestrians up to and down from the crosswalks over the Strip mostly fall under the jurisdiction of Clark County.

As for their maintenance, county Public Information Officer Dan Kulin explains, "We take care of the escalators that are ours. We frequently maintain ours and we have on-call repair crews, so our escalators typically get fixed rather quickly. There are also some that are private and obviously we don’t have a role in fixing any of those.”

Clark County, however, owns the great majority of the escalators on the Strip. To wit:

Tropicana-Excalibur

Excalibur-New York New York

New York New York-MGM Grand

MGM Grand-Tropicana

CityCenter-Cosmopolitan

Cosmopolitan-Planet Hollywood

Planet Hollywood-south side of Harmon Avenue

Bellagio-Caesars Palace

Caesars Palace-The Cromwell

The Cromwell-Bally’s Las Vegas

Bally’s Las Vegas-Bellagio

Treasure Island-Fashion Show Mall

Fashion Show Mall-Wynn Las Vegas

Wynn Las Vegas-Palazzo

The overpass that's under construction currently between Park MGM and the Showcase Mall is owned by the county; coincidentally, its completion was delayed a month due to "utility conflicts tied to the escalators."

Another overpass owned by the county that will connect the front of Bellagio to to Planet Hollywood is next up and construction should start in 2021. The four overpasses planned for the intersection of Sahara and the Strip will be owned by the county and will be built starting in 2022. At least two others should follow: between Caesars Palace and the LINQ and around Resorts World, all county-owned.

Who is supposed to maintain the escalators to the pedestrian overpasses on the Las Vegas Strip?

    A social problem solution
The guys that are always squatting at the top or bottom of the escalators asking for change--they could be given maintenance jobs! Give each of them a can of WD-40 and some cleaning rags, and pay them minimum wage. Then, every day at the end of their shift, they'd have enough to buy a six-pack of beer and play video poker for an hour (if they stick to nickels). Everybody wins!

    creepy ride
What about those elevators? They (and the areas around them) are always dirty. And slow. Feels like being in a back alley while waiting for one. Haven't used one in years for that reason. Maybe things have improved.

    Escalators out
People in a wheelchair are stuck when the elevators aren't working. The elevators at the corner of the strip and Flamingo are frequently out of service. The phone number provided always goes to voice mail. The phone number needs to be answered by a live person. The city needs to outsource to an organization that can provide a guaranteed level of uptime (e.g. 99%) through better maintenance and response times. The elevators are frequently dirty.
