Question of the Day - 19 May 2019

Q:

A friend of mine says the longest distance a Las Vegas pedestrian can walk while remaining indoors is from the northern front door of the Excalibur to the southern end of the Mandalay Convention Center (close to a mile, he says). Is that true?

A:

Yes, we believe it is. It’s not quite a mile; our calculations put it at around eight-tenths of one, but it’s a pretty long walk indoors along the Strip.

And it’s certainly Las Vegas’ only three-casino group that’s connected in such a way that you don’t have to walk outdoors to pass among them.

The Venetian-Palazzo and Wynn-Encore are the two Strip casinos connected by a single continuous roof.

Even downtown, with the casinos closely packed together, you have to walk out onto Fremont Street in order to leave one and enter the next. The exception is the elevated walkway across Main Street between the California and Main Street Station, also entirely indoors. (We also know of a tunnel that was dug between Binion’s Horseshoe and the Fremont in the ’50s, which might or might not still be passable, but certainly not by pedestrians).

In Reno, you can walk indoors from Circus-Circus to Eldorado, with Silver Legacy in between. Even then, at about 1,000 feet, it doesn’t give Excalibur-MBay a walk for its money, though it is a three-casino connection.

    Connected Casinos
You forgot to mention Ballys/Paris, although, again, nothing close to Excal-MBay.

In AC, there was a connector between Resorts and Taj Mahal. Not sure if it’s still there now that Hard Rock renovated Taj. The connector between Taj/HR and Showboat is still accessible.

Then again, that’s not even half a mile....

    MGM to Signature
What about the walk from the front of the MGM to the furthest tower at the Signature? I walk pretty quickly and it takes nearly 15 minutes so I’m thinking that must be the best part of a mile

    Not 3 casinos.....
    ....but 3 buildings....

You can walk from Monte Carlo to the Aria through the mall without going outside. I don't think it's as great a distance as Excalibur-to-Mandalay Bay, but it'll get you from basically T-Mobile Arena to the Harmon Avenue crossover to Cosmopolitan while staying indoors the entire time.

Yopu could for a period of several years walk north from Trump World's Fair and take a covered walkway across the Boardwalk Hall's upper level then into Trump Plaza then into Caesar's Palace and then into Bally's Wild West and into Bally's Park Place. But, you had to cross the street to go into the Sands and that was connected to the Claridge.

    Longest run?
What is the longest indoor run? I'd rather not run outside when it's too hot. An indoor run has to be: 1) a place where running is acceptable (and doesn't look like i'm running AWAY from anything) and 2) doesn't involve the treadmill (aka Dreadmill). Thoughts?

This in via email from Chris
Outside Las Vegas, Harvey’s and Harrah’s Lake Tahoe are connected with a tunnel under Highway 50. Not a very long walk, but it is nice if it’s snowing outside.

Funny thing is those are sister resorts now under the Caesars brand, but when the tunnel was built they were both independent of each other.

    LV Convention Center?
Can one walk from one end of the LVCC to the other? If yes, how far would that be?
