A follow-up question to the QoD on trash pick-up from the Strip casinos: Where does all that casino trash go?
“It’s the same exact thing that happens to your everyday trash," says Republic Services Community Relations Manager Jeremy Walters, the community-relations manager for Republic Services, the second-largest provider of non-hazardous solid waste collection, transfer, disposal, recycling, and energy services in the U.S. “It’s hauled to the landfills.”
Most casinos do “back-dock sorting” to recover recyclable materials and assets, such as linens, silverware, and food waste.
The food waste is hauled out to a pig farm, Las Vegas Livestock, where a high-protein diet helps fatten the pigs. It’s located past the Las Vegas Speedway on I-15 near the Apex Landfill, where Republic hauls all the non-recyclable trash.
And you might be interested to know that Las Vegas Livestock composts the pig poop. Reports Walters, “LVL makes very little waste.”
LVL doesn't sell its pork locally (yet -- they hint that they hope to in the future), but they do sell eggs from free range and have 24/7 indoor and outdoor access; look for Las Vegas Livestock eggs sold around town.
