Can you tell us about the Marine restaurant in Chinatown that you have reviewed in a past newsletter?
Happy to.
We first reviewed the Leatherneck Club in the August 2018 Advisor.
We wrote, "Spring Mountain Road is home to several little strip malls populated with ethnic restaurants and bars. In one of them, located in the middle of Chinatown a block east of Arville St., sits the Leatherneck Club. The bar is themed for and celebrates the U.S. Marines, complete with a mini-museum displaying an impressive collection of weaponry, vintage photos, and memorabilia. One of the bartenders told us that it’s the only such place west of the Mississippi. We couldn’t verify that, but we do know that the Leatherneck Club has been operating right under our noses for more than 30 years, and since we never thought to look in this unlikely spot, we’ve only just discovered it.
"Of course, the clientele is Marine-centric, but a sign out front insists, 'Everyone is Welcome.' Over several visits, we’ve found that to be true, experiencing nothing but friendly interaction with the patrons and bartenders.
"If you’re a current or former Marine, your first drink is on the house. The museum is free (get a virtual look at leatherneckbar.com)."
We can also say that the food is better than usual bar quality. The menu is made up of diner-type selections. Appetizers are $4-$9, burgers $11-$14, pizza $10, sandwiches $10 (ham, turkey) up to $13 (bacon/chicken). Our go-to lunch is the Chesty Burger, named for one of the most decorated Marines in history, Lieutenant General Chesty Puller, smothered in Hatch chiles and pepper-jack cheese.
The kitchen is open until 9 pm. The bar is open daily from 11 am to 11 pm, midnight on weekends.
