Question of the Day - 20 October 2021

Q:

What ever happened to the game Let It Ride? Years ago, it was found in almost every Las Vegas casino, but now it has disappeared.

And

I’ve noticed that the table game Let it Ride has been getting harder to find at many casinos. Is it just me? Or has the game been losing popularity among players and/or casino operators?

A:

Let It Ride is one of the oldest proprietary table games. That means it was among the earliest of the new inventor- and company-designed games supplied to the casinos starting in the late 1980s. Prior to that, casinos and card rooms offered only the traditional public-domain games of blackjack, craps, baccarat, roulette, Big Six, and Pai Gow Poker.

The patent for Let it Ride expired more than five years ago, so it too is now in the public domain. Thus, there’s less incentive for game distributors to support the original, as competitors and casino operators can run them for less cost after re-trademarking them. That said, Galaxy Gaming’s version of Let it Ride found little demand in comparison to the newer and hotter games.

In addition, Let it Ride has faded pretty much out of view because it's a paytable game. You play against a paytable and not the dealer with your final hand, so it’s more volatile and lacks the potential for a showdown win if the dealer has a weak hand.

    BLEACCHHHH
As a former dealer at Barona in San Diego (which still has this game, as far as I know), this was the worst to deal. Players hardly ever won, always blamed the dealer, boring as all hell. So if it does go bye-bye, good riddance :)

    Laughlin
Harrah's Laughlin has LIR as of this week. I believe Beau Rivage as it, or did as of several months ago. I didn't care for it first time to play and don't play it anymore, so haven't paid that close attention to the minimums, etc.

    Let it Ride
still at Mgm in August, personally I love this game. Yes, it's horrible odds, but you can drink and play, and there's no interaction with other hands so no one gripes if you go off strategy

    Loved it
I know how bad the dealers hated dealing this game...called it Let it Die, but one of the first times I played it many years ago, I hit 4 aces. Had a nice payout. It's an easy game for newbies, no pressure from other players as previously stated, so I think the table atmosphere is always a little more laid back and fun. When you do see a table, it's always full, and people ask if they are opening another table. Sorry if the dealers don't like dealing this game, but having worked in a casino, I know the players still love it. Just want to add @dave, the players blame the dealer no matter what the game is.

    LIR debuted 1993, patented 1994
I have an article from 2004 that lists the top ten proprietary games at that time. Three Card Poker was number 1 with 1500 placements. LIR was number 2 with 625 placements. Caribbean Stud, a former number 1, was number 3 with 600 placements. Times change, but at least part of the reason for LIR's and CS's decline was the rather high house edge, even with optimal play. This is a lesson that game designers should pay attention to.

    Horrible Odds
I remember the first time I saw the game was when I was sitting anchor at a BJ table and the game was right next to me. After watching it for awhile I whispered to the pit boss if that game was the license to steal that it appeared to be. He just got this sly smile and walked away.

    LIR
I saw Let It Ride at the California DTLV two weeks ago, and at the MGM and Flamingo on the LV strip in September. The game at MGM was only open sporadically. Good luck to all whatever you play!

I'm not surprised at the comments
Let It Ride was one table game I made a lot of money playing.
    Players never understood it.
Dealers never knew how to play it.
    So I took advantage.

Let It Ride is a lot like Video poker.
In each you are playing against a paytable.
In each you have to make perfect play decisions.
The main difference is you are seeing only one dealt card at a time instead of all cards at once.
Therefore your perfect play decisions change constantly until the last card dealt.
That is a lot like playing Texas Hold'em.

    Get It!!!

    Incorrect analogy
It's not like video poker. It's like video poker with a bad paytable. It's true that your playing strategy affects the outcome; however, it's like 6/5 Jacks or Better. You can strategize until your eyeballs pop out, and you'll still lose.

Anybody who insists on playing it should learn the proper strategy, which should take approximately 2.5 minutes.

    Relaxing Game
I like playing Let It Ride before going to the room end of night. Have a drink or two, socialize with the people at the table who are normally friendly, sometimes fun. Just decided to go to Vegas in December, glad to hear Flamingo still has it for my end of evening routine.

    Let It Ride
I agree it is one of the worst games for players, but people love to play it. It is my sisters favorite table game even though she knows the odds. At CET properties before COVID they were usually $5 minimums. Now they are usually $10 or $15 min. I was just in LV Oct.9-13. Flamingo still has 2 tables, both open at night after 8:00 pm. Bally's I believe only has one. Before their remodel they had 3. Harrah's is down to one. During peak times you can't get near the tables. They are always full. They are one of the games that are part of the Progressive jackpot at CET Properties. I don't play it often, but will sit down if the other games aren't being "nice". Most people playing LIR make for a good time. I hit a straight flush at Flamingo in August for $30,905.00 on the progressive plus $6000 on the hand. 3 of the others playing won $1500.00 on the Envy payout.

    LIR Sept 2021
I played LIR at Harrah's (Two tables, one in center of casino going from Casino Royal to Linq. The other down a way from Numb Bar. I was playing there with 4 others @ $10, after 15 min of losing Pit Critter came and LOWERED the table to $5.)

Linq one table way in back almost to Cashier. $10 game, terrible dealer, she was more interested in watching people walking by. Myself and other players had to tell her to wake up (got Pit Critter involved) when we had winning 3-card bets that she took the cards without paying (me a spade flush, another player had (Jack,10,8) Dealer had(10,J) she only wanted to pay on pair of jacks. The whole table (4 of us) left after that hand.
