Question of the Day - 28 May 2019

Q:

When I was a kid, my family and I sat around a black-and-white television to watch the Liberace Show. "Mr. Show-business" as he was referred to in Vegas. We became big fans. In later years when I traveled to Las Vegas, I often thought of going to the Liberace Museum, but never made it there. My question: Is there any place I can go to see some of his memorabilia?

A:

There certainly is.

The Liberace Foundation for the Creative and Performing Arts is a nonprofit institution founded in 1976 by Liberace himself. “Mr. Showmanship” endowed the Foundation with his collection of costumes, automobiles, antiques, art, and jewelry, plus around $4 million in cash, much of which was turned into grants and scholarships.

The collection is on display in two locations in Las Vegas. The Liberace Garage is a museum that opened on April 7, 2016, and houses Lee’s automobiles and related artifacts from the Liberace Museum Collection. It’s located at 5115 Dean Martin Drive, Suite 905. It’s just south of Tropicana across I-15 from Luxor. Tickets are $18 online, $20 at the door.

The collection from the museum itself is housed at Thriller Villa, the former Las Vegas residence of Michael Jackson; Jackson and Liberace were friends and, in a way, kindred souls. (Liberace’s boyfriend Scott Thorson claims he had a “six- to seven-year affair” with Jackson.)

Three-hour tours of the Thriller Villa are by appointment only, cost $129 per person, include a light champagne lunch, transportation to and from the Strip, and admission to the Liberace Garage, and are limited to 12 people at a time. The Thriller Villa is located at 2710 Palomino Lane, a little north of Charleston and little east of Rancho.

You can buy tickets on the Foundation website, liberace.org.

Not exactly a fan of these gentlemen
"[Michael] Jackson and Liberace were friends and, in a way, kindred souls." In which ways they were kindred souls, you don't want to know.

"[tours] cost $129 per person, include a *light* champagne lunch," What do you expect for $129, a full meal or something?

    The Champagne comes from ̶L̶̶i̶̶b̶̶e̶̶r̶̶a̶̶c̶̶e̶̶̶̶s̶ ̶f̶̶a̶̶m̶̶o̶̶u̶̶s̶ ̶w̶̶o̶̶r̶̶l̶̶d̶ ̶c̶̶l̶̶a̶̶s̶̶s̶ ̶w̶̶i̶̶n̶̶e̶ ̶c̶̶e̶̶l̶̶l̶̶a̶̶r̶ Target.

    worth it
Glad to know about the tour. Will do that one some time. Saw the 'old' Liberace museum, the one in the strip mall, many years ago--awesome.

I would [almost] kill to play piano one tenth as well as Liberace, and sing/dance like MJ. No judgment of their lifestyles is necessary to appreciate their skill and hard work to entertain us.

    Circus Circus
Well the Rio sounds like the Palms, sad but true. Circus-Circus does have a fleet of limos, a two story Executive Suite, outstanding Steakhouse, a fleet of planes owned by MGMMirage, and the common man's touch.

I noticed this in my years of play in Lake Charles LA: there were many large player's who preferred the Isle of Capri (Pile of Debris) to Harrah's, but why. There are many self made people uneasy in a luxuries property, such as the Horseshoe Bossier. I bet their are plenty of gamblers like Philippine's President Rodrigo Duterte, a crude like guy, with simpler tastes. This really is an untapped market.

    Unclaimed Funds
If you check the NV Unclaimed Funds website, you'll find the Liberace Museum has two accounts. Lee Liberace also has over $1000 in Warner Music royalties. Maybe that's Liberace himself?
