We took a limo from a north Strip casino to the airport. The driver told us that Fontainebleau is "sucking employees" from the nearby casinos, paying higher salaries. He also said that the fancy north Strip casinos aren't happy about F1. They have full houses already booked, but many of the guests are coming from other countries, including the Middle East who don't have paying gratuities in their culture, but are extremely demanding, etc. The driver said "everybody" is dreading F1 week, it'll be a total cluster. What says QoD?
Hm. Hard to put much faith in a limo driver's rumors, though there might be some facts at the heart of them.
For one, Fontainebleau paying more than the Wynn could be true, given the tight labor market that Fontainebleau is hiring into, but it could also be false, given the track records with employee relations of the competing casinos -- Wynn, Resorts World, and Venetian --and Fontainebleau's lack of one.
That said, one high-profile defection from Resorts World to Fontainebleau is Tiesto, who jumped ship recent from his residency to cross the street. We also hear rumors, speaking of which, that RW will also lose other big-name performers to whatever temptations Fontainebleau is seducing them away with.
For another, we tend to doubt that the north Strip casinos are unhappy about F1. Why would management be unhappy about the lack of a tipping culture of international visitors? That sounds much more like limo drivers are unhappy about it.
It's certainly no secret that all Strip employees are dreading the race. Getting to work will be much more onerous than it's been even over the past few months during the road work on Las Vegas Boulevard. Not a single employee we know of isn't looking forward to the day that all the Grand Prix hoopla is behind them -- for a year. And it's not just employees; only one or two locals of our acquaintance will be attending the race, while the rest of us are also waiting for it to be over.
And if the comments about the QoDs on the race are any indication, most visitors who won't be around for it are too.
