Question of the Day - 30 September 2023

Q:

We took a limo from a north Strip casino to the airport. The driver told us that Fontainebleau is "sucking employees" from the nearby casinos, paying higher salaries. He also said that the fancy north Strip casinos aren't happy about F1. They have full houses already booked, but many of the guests are coming from other countries, including the Middle East who don't have paying gratuities in their culture, but are extremely demanding, etc. The driver said "everybody" is dreading F1 week, it'll be a total cluster. What says QoD?

A:

Hm. Hard to put much faith in a limo driver's rumors, though there might be some facts at the heart of them.

For one, Fontainebleau paying more than the Wynn could be true, given the tight labor market that Fontainebleau is hiring into, but it could also be false, given the track records with employee relations of the competing casinos -- Wynn, Resorts World, and Venetian --and Fontainebleau's lack of one.

That said, one high-profile defection from Resorts World to Fontainebleau is Tiesto, who jumped ship recent from his residency to cross the street. We also hear rumors, speaking of which, that RW will also lose other big-name performers to whatever temptations Fontainebleau is seducing them away with.

For another, we tend to doubt that the north Strip casinos are unhappy about F1. Why would management be unhappy about the lack of a tipping culture of international visitors? That sounds much more like limo drivers are unhappy about it.

It's certainly no secret that all Strip employees are dreading the race. Getting to work will be much more onerous than it's been even over the past few months during the road work on Las Vegas Boulevard. Not a single employee we know of isn't looking forward to the day that all the Grand Prix hoopla is behind them -- for a year. And it's not just employees; only one or two locals of our acquaintance will be attending the race, while the rest of us are also waiting for it to be over.

And if the comments about the QoDs on the race are any indication, most visitors who won't be around for it are too.

The faster they come in . . .
. . . The faster they go out. What could be a 'lasting benefit ' from F1? Smoother roads? It looks like the Casinos caved to anything F1 wanted. What about next year? It can only get better.

    Will F1 be televised?
With all the hoopla surrounding F1 does anyone know if the race will be televised and on what channel/network?

  • Shurk Sep-30-2023
    F1 NO WAY.
I cancelled my usual trip which spans the Friday thru Wednesday before Thanksgiving because of the race. Don't need the headaches it's going to cause. I'll stay back East and head down to Atlantic City instead.

    Atlantic City?
Shark--I was recently in Atlantic City. Other than the new production show at Caesars there is no comparison, even with the "mess in LAS". AC even looks worse every year that I visit. My hotel even warned me about walking outside at night! Personally I'd reschedule for after the race mess is cleaned up!

    F1
Every single person I have talked with or listened to has been unhappy with one or more aspects of what F1 is doing to Vegas. The removal of trees and blocking of views is just the latest. It seems the whole Strip experience is degraded for this one race -- it's hard to understand why this was approved.

    Expect a Fiasco
Several things have and will happen with this boondoggle called F-1. The disruptions that have and are continuing to take place in preperation for this joke foisted upon Vegas businesses have caused woes for these businesses and their employees. I am sure that there will be many glowing lies about how great this race was after it is over - which will just be nothing more than face saving. Revenues will be lost and visitor numbers will decline. Whoever bought this bill of goods to the fools who decided that hosting this race was a good idea should be run out of town - and possibly will be. I find it hard to imagine that anyone will pay the absurd asking prices being asked just to see brief glimpses of cars going round and round. The ONLY positive I see is that some of the streets have been improved by the disruptive roadwork that has transpired.
