Question of the Day - 28 June 2018

Q:

So in mid-July I’m going back to Vegas because of some great free play and room comps. They're even picking us up in a limo and taking us to Paris. My question is what is the proper tip for a limo driver? $20 would be about the cost of a taxi but $10 may be too cheap ...  I know you're the guys to ask.

A:

It's a comped ride, so you don't have to fork over any additional money. Also, the driver is probably standing there at baggage claim with your name on a sign, he'll help handle your luggage, and you get to ride in a big shiny car like a rock star or politician. So we say $20 would be the minimum, since you're going to Paris. If you were heading out to Red Rock or Aliante, it would be more.

As always, we'd like to hear what QoDers have to say on the subject. We're sure plenty of you have taken comped rides from the airport to center Strip (and beyond). What are your tipping habits? Any interesting experiences to relate?

    Four to watch!
At Cobo Hall Convention Center in Detroit, it "sheepishly" takes as many as four to screw-in a lightbulb as it's a Union Shop. Similarly, we have had as many as four people "help" us into a cab from a hotel. Unless it is raining hard, we tip no one but the cabbie, based on his performance. "Long-hauled" gets no tip. Are we "frugal" or just plain cheap?

    limo tipping
I asked my Host (high-end Strip property) this question. He said "They would be very happy with twenty-five." I should have, but didn't, go on to ask "twenty-five each?" There are usually three of us, husband, our friend, and myself. Husband and I do $40 and friend does $30, total of $70 which ought to make him/her "very" happy, though that may be over doing it. I took it that Host probably meant $25 for the both (or all three) of us, but we hate to appear cheap and $25 for three of us sounded low, like close to what a taxi ride would cost (but much nicer).

    George it up!
Let's see... free play, room comps, free limo. That tells me you don't have champagne taste but a beer budget. They don't hand out those things to a player who never plays.

Live a little. Drop a C-note. Be George!

It's not like you are paying for room, plus resort fee, plus whatever else they are throwing your way.

    Be George.

I think $5 per person from airport to strip is about right. Regardless of where you stay, chances are you lost a bundle to qualify for a limo ride. The limo ride is a tip to you for your losses. You don't want to return to much of your tip. As an aside, I live locally so I never need a ride from the airport but that's what I would do. Now from Reno airport to Tahoe or from Philadelphia airport to Atlantic City that's a different story, perhaps another subject for the Question of The Day.

    LIMO TIP
The "free limo ride" to the Chicken Ranch is worth a $20 tip. The drivers gets paid by the lady that you were with. So,he gets paid twice.

    Tipping for comped limos
I get limo to/from the airport when I stay at the Mirage and tip $40 minimum. If the trip has gone well and I'm up a bunch of money I've tipped as much as $100 for the trip to the airport.
My gut instinct is that $20 would be the minimum, assuming you get decent service (ie: courteous, showed up on time, etc).
