What's happened to all the live keno lounges of yesteryear? We used to love to while away some time in the comfy seats, waiting for the games to run every so often to see what happened to our dollar bets. But they're few and far between now. The only one we know of is at the Horseshoe. Are there any others and if so, where?
Keno lounges are, without a doubt, an endangered species. The slow pace of the games, the amount of floor space they take up, plus the labor-intensive process, including keno runners and drink servers, has relegated them to the same place in the ether into which all the former buffets, free lounge acts, funbooks, birthday promos, 99-cent shrimp cocktails and $1.99 bacon and eggs breakfasts, showroom maitre d's, free cigarettes, and more have disappeared. Add to that the popularity of video keno and the remaining days of the few live holdouts are no doubt numbered.
As far as we know, the Horseshoe's live keno game is the last one on the Strip. The long-time space at Harrah's closed a few months ago and the other sole survivor at Excalibur preceded that.
Downtown, you can still find three: at the Plaza, the D, and the California. (The Plaza also boasts downtown's last bingo room.)
At the locals joints, the Gold Coast, Orleans, and all but one of the Station casinos, including Red Rock and Green Valley Ranch, though not the new Durango, have reliable live keno games.
