Question of the Day - 13 August 2018

Q:

My wife and I are retiring to Pahrump from California in September. In Las Vegas, are Pahrump residents considered “locals” and thereby entitled to any or all benefits therein?

A:

In everything we’ve seen over many years, "local" includes anyone who possesses a Nevada ID. Here's a typical example from a recent ad in Las Vegas Weekly:

"Best Pool for Locals: The Sway Pool at Silverton is always free with your Nevada ID."

Exceptions to this rule are spelled out in the fine print, such as when local Las Vegas zip codes are specified, as they are from time to time.

So, yes, Pahrump will usually qualify.

But this is one where the collective knowledge of readers will be valuable, so if anyone, especially any Pahrumpians out there (and we know who you are!) has first-hand experience either way, please chime in.

    Look for the eagle,
On the bottom right of your license."Local" could mean any city or county in Nevada?
Reno and Tahoe cities are in Nevada, too.

I looked around a little at restrictions about being a local and found none.
No zip code or County restrictions.
    Military ID works,too.
One site stated that if you are stationed in "Southern" Nevada.
Creech and Nellis are both in Clark County.

    retired in pahrump
As a 5 year retired couple in Pahrump, we have seen things change a lot in this area. Used to be we were eligible for just about anything locals were offered up. Not so now. Our experiences now find that Pahrump and Mesquite residents are not considered local for most offers including food, parking and forms of entertainment such as deals on ticket purchases. Also, a lot of locals in Vegas complain that even their residency doesn't help much. Since the deals are gone for hotel rooms, resort fees and everything else related ,you might as well live in New York. Nevada drivers license used to matter but not anymore. It's pretty much the same for all.

    Why?
Lived in Pahrump going on 9 years and never, ever, went to Las Vegas for any casino action that offered a "locals" discount. In fact, Pahrump casinos offer better everything except top name entertainment and at Vegas prices I couldn't afford their shows. Never even heard of a "locals" advantage being offered anywhere else in Nevada, in fact, anywhere else but the Strip. So, don't worry, be happy in Pahrump.

    Don't assume you're a local
Even if you think you live in Las Vegas (ha!). I had a house in North Las Vegas, and another in Silverado Ranch, about ten years ago. In each case, I found to my surprise that I was not eligible for locals' promos in certain casinos. Boyd was the worst, as it also is now. The general tightening up of everything has extended to the definition of who is and who isn't a local. I've talked to people who live in Mesquite and Pahrump, and they don't get Vegas locals' mailers. REALLY stupidly, I know some people who live in Bullhead City and aren't considered eligible for Laughlin locals' promos!!!

    Monorail.Parking.
A buck a ride for "locals",limited to 2 per day.How are tickets purchased and what is that criteria?
What about parking. Is there a discount for that, too?

    Mesquite is Local
I live in Mesquite and have always gotten a local discount in Las Vegas when I ask for it. Mainly for shows but I have to show my driver's license when I pick them up so I can't buy them for others.

    Pahrump?
I'm just curious: What is there about Pahrump that would make you want to retire there?

  • Howard Wilson Aug-13-2018
    Because...
    Henderson was closed.
Actually, it was affordability, bang for the buck and it’s quiet with little traffic.
Also, it was agonizing trying to get offers accepted in Henderson.
Side question to other Pahrumpians. Why don’t you have a movie theater?

    Rome Paris London Pahrump
Pahrump is in the absolute middle of nowhere, roughly an hour from Vegas (and don't try to make that 59 minutes, or the Nevada Highway Patrol will getcha). It's 80 or so miles from Death Valley; it's within a half hour of four brothels. Many people have horses.
The town used to be real nothingsville, but it's grown to the extent that there are basic services. I would consider living there to be hell on earth because of the isolation (nothing whatsoever in three directions for 100+ miles), but that might be why some people like it. I find the number of casinos there to be amusing, as in Nevada, casinos are essential services for a small town. Shopping malls, hospitals, schools, take em or leave em, but we've built you folks three shiny new casinos to dump your paycheck!
