Question of the Day - 20 July 2019

Q:

Visiting friends who retired to Vegas last year, they took us to Luv-It Custard. My husband and I have been going to Las Vegas for 40 years and we never heard of it before. We couldn't believe what we've been missing all these years. Why is it such a secret?

A:

We can't really call it a secret: It's a perennial winner of "Best Ice Cream" honors in the Las Vegas Review-Journal's popularity poll; it's been in the same location and in the hands of the same family since 1973; and it serves the creamiest, silkiest, sweetest frozen concoction this side of Margaritaville.

On the other hand, it's housed in a little shack a half-block east of Las Vegas Blvd. and a half-block north of the Stratosphere on Oakey, where most of the action is at the walk-up window, so it's not exactly an architectural standout in a highly visible location.

So it's a matter of whether or not you know about it, but once you find it, we can confidently predict you'll visit it again and again if frozen desserts are your thing.

Custard is a variation of ice cream. It has an egg base, so it contains less sugar and milk fat and no ice crystals. Less air is whipped in, so it’s richer and melts more slowly.

Luv-It's custard is prepared fresh daily from secret family recipes that date back nearly 50 years. There are 20 flavors, everything from "sin-a-buns" and root-beer float to chocolate pretzel and apple spice; lemon is the local fave. Everything is made fresh daily, with vanilla and chocolate and at least two additional flavors available every day; check the Luv-It Frozen Custard's from our website where you can read a review, see the hours, their menu, and access their website for more information.

Also on the website, you'll find a long list of rave reviews in local and national publications about Luv-It's custard, including bits about its long history, custard production, and personal testimonials.

Luv-It's custard is a bit pricey, perhaps 20%-30% more expensive than regular ice cream, but it's well worth it. Luv-It also serves 20 different sundaes, plus malts, shakes, and floats. The custard is also served in cones, cups, and hard-packed pints, quarts, and half-gallons; the signature menu items include Luv Sticks (frozen custard bars on a stick, available in all flavors) and chocolate-covered frozen bananas.

    O.K.
But that's about it! I don't like soft ice cream, I actually like it hard so I have to chew it, so I agree with Michael. We did try it and thought it was just O.K. I'm sorry, too because I like to support local, family owned businesses, but I won't run to go back. Leprechaun

    Farther north than stated
Oakey is more than just 1/2 block north of the Stratosphere. The cross street that ends at Las Vegas Blvd at the north end of the Stratosphere complex is St. Louis Ave, and according to Google maps, Oakey is about 1000 feet north of St. Louis Ave.

    I like Luv-It
I agree that I don't like ice cream that's too soft, like that wimpy stuff called "soft serve". But I didn't think that Luv-It's frozen custard was too soft. It didn't seem very different in consistency from regular ice cream to me. I don't want to have to actually bite through hard ice cream; I like it kind of in-between: somewhat firm but not too firm. I've enjoyed every Luv-It flavor that I've tried. And while I agree with Del that I like to support mom'n'pop businesses (or just a 1-man business), 2 other factors for me are that I get tired of the same-old-same-old, and when I'm in a city far from home I like to try things that are local instead of things I can get in my home city.

    You missed it
My favorite flavor was left off your list, Licorice. It may sound strange but if like black licorice, this is to die for. It is very rare to find this flavor. I have only found 2 other places that make it. And no Luv-it’s is not soft. You can even get it in hard packed and take it home. Give them and Licorice a try.
