Our grandson and his fiancee are going to Las Vegas for the first time. They're thinking of getting married there. They asked us for a recommendation for ice cream. We want to recommend the little custard place near downtown, but neither of us can remember what it's called or exactly where it is. Can you tell us?
We certainly can and it's a great recommendation.
A half-block east of Las Vegas Blvd. and a half-block north of the Strat on Oakey sits a little shack with a drive-up window that’s served the creamiest, silkiest, sweetest frozen concoction this side of Margaritaville since 1973. It's called Luv-It Frozen Custard and has been in the same location and in the hands of the same family ever since (now in its fourth generation).
Custard is a variation of ice cream. It has an egg base, so it contains less sugar and milk fat and no ice crystals. Less air is whipped in, so it’s richer and melts more slowly.
Luv-It's custard, which has won many awards, is prepared fresh daily from secret family recipes that date back more than 50 years. There are 20 or so flavors, everything from egg nog and "sin-a-buns" to malt creme and pumpkin; lemon is the local fave. Everything is made fresh daily, with vanilla and chocolate and at least two additional flavors available every day. Your grandson and his girlfriend can check the "Flavor Calendar" on the website for the selection.
Luv-It's custard is a bit pricey, perhaps 20%-30% more expensive than regular ice cream, but it's well worth it. Luv-It also serves a variety sundaes, shakes, malts, and frozen quarts to go. Order ahead through the mobile app or just show up at the walk-up window. There are several parking spaces (free).
The hours are 1-10 pm Monday-Thursday and till 11 pm Friday-Sunday.
