Question of the Day - 27 September 2024

Q:

Why does LVA link in the newsletter to the Dining and Entertainment reviews? I want to print out the whole newsletter, including the reviews, but to do so, I'm forced to choose between two bad options: either print all the reviews separately, wasting colored ink on peripheral frazzle and ending up with an untidy product, or pasting screenshots into a Word document, then removing the peripheral frazzle and work/size them to fit tidily on pages. Why can't LVA just fit the reviews into the newsletter itself, so I can print the whole thing without all the work?

A:

For many decades, we published a print version of the Las Vegas Advisor. Even when we began offering an online version as well, it had to look exactly like the print edition; we couldn't publish two different versions of the Advisor every month.

When we discontinued the printed/snail-mailed newsletter, it freed us up to play around with various formats for the periodical. Eventually, we landed on linking from the Advisor to our main Dining and Entertainment reviews, which we post on blog pages.

This accomplishes a number of things. First, it allows us to write longer reviews, since we no longer have to abide by strict space limitations. That essentially removes the handcuffs we've had to wear for so long, stifling our impulses to delve more deeply into all the restaurants and stage productions. Second, we can also post more and larger photos of the restaurants, food, and shows, which give you a better look at what you can expect to see and eat if you try these places. And third, it frees up space in the newsletter itself for more quick-hitting information, which is our preferred style.

That answers your questions as to why does and why can't.

Still, we're not unaware that some subscribers, like you, prefer to print out the newsletter and we're wondering how pervasive the sentiment is. So we're taking the opportunity of this QoD to conduct a quickie comment-box poll.

Do you print the newsletter?

If you do, would you like the reviews to be placed within it so you can just print off the whole thing without the "frazzle" and "all the work?"

If you print the newsletter, do you also print the blog reviews? Or if you don't print them, do you see that as a hardship?

Finally, are you content with not printing the newsletter at all and just reading it online?

    Online vs. print
I am fine with just reading online

  • Michael Mendoza Sep-27-2024
    online works for me
as much as I like reading a hard copy, I too have gotten used to reading it online.

  • thebeachbum Sep-27-2024
    No Paper Here
I prefer the current online version. I enjoy the extra details and better photos. These days, I avoid paper. Not because I’m worried about the environment, but I just don’t like filling up my trash can. Just more work.

  • Fred Hobl Sep-27-2024
    Mr
I print out a hard copy of the news letter. As a senior citizen I find it difficult to read the small print of the online version. I suppose I could enlarge the print but it still becomes difficult to navigate around the pages.

  • Bob Sep-27-2024
    Nope
Never printed the newsletter or any restaurant reviews. But... I have seen other things where you could print the content without the advertising, Peripheral info, etc. Recipes and boarding passes come to mind?

  • Edso Sep-27-2024
    Online is Fine
I never print it out, so online works great for me.

  • Tim Soldan Sep-27-2024
    I like to print
I do read it online but would like the option to print with the reviews without having to paste and etc.

    Always print
I find it hard to read online and always print.

  • Larry Stone Sep-27-2024

not getting the value of it online
I loved the print version, especially when you downsized it to the last version. I did print out the online version a couple of times, but it wasn't very practical as it was a lot of paper to tote around. I now never remember to go online to read it, so it's completely worthless to me. I don't think I've looked at a copy the entire year, probably longer. I really don't like reading electronic format. I was more than happy paying a few dollars more so I could get the hard copy. Now I pay the same price and don't get anything except the rewards book (100% my fault, I know).

    Print
Always print it out as difficult to read online.

  • Timothy Grant Sep-27-2024
    Print
I hate reading online and always print. Unfortunately, I am then forced to go back online to read the reviews. I dislike online so much that I would have cancelled if it wasn't for the MRB.

  • Sharon Sep-27-2024
    Miss printed copy
I so enjoyed the printed copy and have actually saved them all! Would prefer the hard copy, but C’est la vie!

  • MannyB007 Sep-27-2024
    Newsletter
I read everything online. I don't like using paper because it is a waste since it always ends up in the garbage. I also prefer online because I can read it on my phone as well or anywhere I have access to my digital platforms.

  • Rob Reid Sep-27-2024
Doesn't make sense to go back
Trying to muddle together two disparate approaches usually doesn't make sense. What you end up with is generally worse than either of the two. You've made the change, stick with it. It does offer the advantages that you hoped for when you made the change.

  • kafka45 Sep-27-2024
    no big deal.
I print the monthly newsletter... just because I like to read it without looking at the screen...and then give it to the wife to look at. But I'm OLD and that's what I'm used to. Totally fine with the current set up.

  • Sandra Ritter Sep-27-2024
    Forget
Now that nothing comes in the mail, I forget to read it. Sorry :(

  • Paul Wellman Sep-27-2024
    Online vs. Print
I read most everything online and have grown to prefer it that way. I like the reminder email that you send letting me know that the newsletter is available.

  • OMB13 Sep-27-2024
    never print....
    but always read!

  • Linda Burnett Sep-27-2024
    Print? Yes.
Yes, I print the newsletter. Much easier to read that way. I don’t bother with the blog reviews.

  • Clark Andelin Sep-27-2024
    Read without links
It's just my preference but I like to read the whole thing without clicking the links to read more. I usually read it on my android tablet when I am in LV & it is annoying to have to keep clicking on links to read the whole thing and then go back to the newsletter.

  • Jed Blaugrund Sep-27-2024
    PRINT!
I would love to be able to print the LVA.

  • Ken Pivernetz Sep-27-2024
    keep as is, but ....
started out printing the newsletter. but that used a ton of ink, and also added to my frustration of having to print even more links if I wanted to read the entire issue. Miss having the printed copy to read in stages but I could say that about a lot of other publications as well. I'd vote for keeping as is, but personally, don't know if I read the newsletter as closely as I once did.

  • Robert Rose Sep-27-2024
    I am content
I prefer reading the newsletter online, and I appreciate that the links are there.

  • Stewart Ethier Sep-27-2024
    Neither
Read online or print? Neither. I export as PDF and then read offline and save the file in a folder.

  • Andrew Krum Sep-27-2024
    enlarge print
on the bottom of the page you can hit the + and enlarge the print. You have to drag the mouse to read each section on the page.

  • Adumb Sep-27-2024
The old “CTRL + C” and “CTRL + V” trick
What about highlighting the text you want to print and doing a copy/paste into a word document (or any word processing program)? It takes 3 seconds and you can edit/format it any way you like.

  • ntm449 Sep-27-2024
    I print the LVA but...
I print the LVA but set format to print pages back to back to save paper. I also print in b&w - no color. Saves ink. If I want more info I can always go back to the archived LVA and click links. Also, those of us who read QoD are used to doing some reading online, so we are being, or have been, conditioned to do more reading on line!

  • Scotski Sep-27-2024

    Read Online
I don't print the newsletter, but I prefer the old .pdf format. It was much easier to read. The new format forces me to turn pages and then I have to resize each page to read it.

  • Ronald Eyer Sep-27-2024
    Changes over time
My 1st newsletter came on 8x11 stapled in the mail.(20-30 yrs ago)
I prefer the hard copy. Don't mind printing my own - when I remember to do it. How about a BOLD type email saying it's available.

  • Roger Gallizzi Sep-27-2024
    Quite Upset
I'm a long time subscriber. I was perfectly happy when you explained why you were going digital. Makes perfect sense. BUT in one of the weekly YouTubes, AC promised the edition would be fully printable. It is not, I prefer to hold it in my hands during cocktail time. So, yes, this really pisses me off. Making the digital version longer doesn't cost you anything more. The only costs is to those of us who wish to print it out.

I only print the newsletter out when I have a trip to Las Vegas planned for the month of the newsletter, and only print the newsletter itself.

    My Method
I read the online version, and if there is anything I wish to have a copy of, I print out that info only.

  • MeBlonde Sep-27-2024
    Prefer old way
For years I kept the hard copies to use as reference. Also, I passed on information that a friend found very useful when she was ill following a trip to Las Vegas to determine what caused her illness. Now, I do read Las Vegas Advisor everyday, especially the question of the day and the current news. Also read the news letter on line and like the heads up when the new issue is available. Prefer the written version and as someone said would pay a little more if I could get both. Haven't been to Las Vegas since Covid but love to know what is going on in Vegas and Laughlin. Thanks

    Miss the printed version
I just resubscribed after a 10+ year hiatus. I really miss the printed mailed version. Loved to highlight and have printed newsletter to review. I think any of your older readers would feel the same.

    newsletter
As an aging boomer reluctant to adapt, I too print the newsletter but only for the month I visit(along with coupons vp schedules etc). I agree with the rational of having tabs as it provides more information in the case it is a restaurant review I wish to visit I just make notes. Bottomline, I think the on-line format works fine.

    online vs print
I prefer to print the newsletter and read at my leisure. Would be nice to see it all without having to click the links. I can survive with the way it is, but honestly that feels like bending to technology instead of keeping options open--- IMHO

  • Allan L Ellis Sep-27-2024
    kEEP THE PRINT
YES. I always print the newsletter. That way I can read it when and where I want. NOT tied to the computer.
    For me; INCLUDE IT ALL.
    Love reading about Las Vegas.
I've been with you for more than 25 years!
    Keep it coming.

    Newsletter
More often than not, I print the newsletter and then share it with my friends that love Las Vegas, as I do. I will also read online and explore the click and read articles or reviews w/o printing those.

  • JerryD Sep-27-2024
    Download
I download it and read it on my pc. I don't mind following the links for reviews. I have wondered why you couldn't just expand the newsletter to include the full reviews, since I saw no reason to believe that the electronic version is confined to a certain number of pages.

  • Kevin Rough Sep-27-2024
I only read it about half of the time
I get the email that it's ready, but I am not ready to read it at that point. When it came in the mail, it went into the bathroom and I would read it in there over a course of a few days. To be honest, I didn't know printing it out was an option. But then I haven't owned a printer in a few years now.

    printing reviews
lots of people printing the newsletter. that seems to be defeating the whole purpose of putting it online. also, if i'm doing it right, i count 15 pages in the newsletter itself, plus 31 pages of restaurant/entertainment reviews. maybe you'd want to not include those in the newsletter, but if you , make it separate, it needs to be easier to find them(the name of the blogs, for instance). as a former coworker used to say, "you're opening up a can or worms".

  • Mike Zaino Sep-27-2024
    mike z
I print off the newsletter each month. I take it with to Vegas to refer to various points of interest and things to do, places to visit, etc. I do not go the links but would love to be able to print off a 25 page newsletter instead of just 11 pages. So making the newsletter longer in the printed version would be great for me. thanks, z

  • Theresa Bolster Sep-27-2024
    I whole heartedly agree
print off the whole thing without the "frazzle" and "all the work

  • Jeffrey Small Sep-27-2024
    Print Option
Although I usually do a quick read through when the Advisor arrives, I often print a hard copy so that I can read the magazine anytime, anywhere! Also, the detailed reviews--sometimes I print them also. Maybe you could consolidate the Dining and Entertainment in depth reviews to a printable collection so those of us who would like to print that could just do so once and have access to all the in depth information!

  • Tim Clark Sep-27-2024
    old school
I still like paper but to save ink and paper I read online but only read what I think is important, before I would read it cover to cover now only read what I want hate reading any thing on line

  • Glenn Leonberger Sep-27-2024
    I download the PDF
I am not a fan of the online version but I'm fine with the downloadable PDF. As for the reviews and / or expanded articles, I click on those that I am interested in so this format works for me.

  • Michael Morgan Sep-27-2024
    Mike M
Rarely read it once it went online. As a subscriber since approximately 1995, I probably will not renew.

  • Bob Nelson Sep-28-2024
    Online is fine
I read in the PDF format which seems to work well for me. It can be downloaded and saved on your computer for future reference. Since a pretty much always bring my laptop when I travel it is easy to keep any issues with me for reference with no added weight in my bag. For the review links I open them in a new tab because returning to the document leaves you at the start instead of where you left off which is annoying.

For the people that forget it is available just set a monthly alert on your phone for the first of the month.

  • Llew Sep-28-2024
    Print
I print the whole newsletter, pages back to back. Then I go back and click the links to the reviews. I read these online. If I find something there that I want to keep, I print that out also. But I do find having to click back and forth between the reviews and the main newsletter somewhat annoying.
I would prefer that the entire newsletter, including the reviews, be printed out without links. After all, would that be so much harder for you? You are already saving so much money by not sending out hard copies anymore.
If there are pages that I am not interested in, I simply don’t print them.

  • Rammie Sep-28-2024

I still print so the hubby can read. It would be great if there was a version which only included the print and not all of the pictures. That would save a lot of ink and paper.

  • Marty Fitzgerald Sep-30-2024
    Yes I print
I subscribed to the hard copy newsletter for a lot of years. I find printing out the newsletter works for me. I would appreciate it if I didn’t have links to print.

I used to print LVA so that I could read it on the go. Now I have to read it on my laptop. If I don't, I can't read the expanded articles. In short, LVA has become much less useful to me. It has been months since I last read it cover to cover.
