Question of the Day - 17 June 2019

Q:

Probably a crazy question, but does LVA offer any kind of tours when LVA members come by?

A:

We don't.

Why not? Well, first of all, there's really not all that much to see.

Beyond the reception area, ably attended by our bubbly receptionist and order taker Nicole, are the conference room (with a table that seats 10 comfortably); the kitchen area (with full fridge, toaster, nuke, and water cooler); "bullpen," with a half-dozen work stations, at one of which Deke likes to hang out; and a couple offices occupied by Tanya, our IT/web manager and all-around competency type, and Brenda, our office manager, researcher, and very long-time Las Vegan.

Through a couple corner doors is the warehouse, full of books and random possessions, including cars on occasion, of numerous friends of LVA who need a little storage space. This is the domain of Scotch Henderson, who does all the shipping and receiving.

Upstairs, the first office you come to is Anthony's, with wall-to-wall shelves full of our books and the ones he refers to constantly, two computers, a phone he spends half his time on, a couch, TV, and door out onto the small Strip-facing balcony.

Across the hall from Anthony is a makeshift podcasting room where Bob Dancer and Richard Munchkin record "Gambling With an Edge."

Down the hall is Laurie's office; she's the graphic artist/book designer with nearly 20 years of time and grade at Huntington Press; every issue of the Advisor and every book we've produced in two decades have gone through her nervous system.

Next door to her is John, the HP accountant.

And in the second place, this is a bustling building with everyone fully engaged all day long (and sometimes into the evening). If we gave tours, we'd have no time for the newsletter, website, books, affiliate deals, customer service and order fulfillment, coupons, accounting, and cogs and gears that keep the machine cranking along.

All that said, Anthony will come downstairs if he has a few moments to spare to chat with members who'd really like to meet him.

    seldom appreciated
"If we gave tours, we'd have no time for the newsletter, website, books, affiliate deals, customer service and order fulfillment, coupons, accounting, and cogs and gears that keep the machine cranking along."

And we thought ya'll just sat around cooling your heels, sippin' cider through a straw, playing solitare, answering the occasional phone call, and debating what to order in for lunch. Work late? Who does that?

LOL. Seriously, very nice virtual tour. Nobody really knows what all is involved in the next guy's work. Thanks to at least 10 (I ran out of fingers) of you for jobs really well done.

amen to Cindy's comments. I live for LVA's monthly news letter, daily QOD and coupons. Someday I do hope to meet Anthony and Deke and the others.

Lost one way to meet Anthony
I was going to accumulate enough points in the Comp City app to get the free dinner from Anthony, but that's fine from the app now. Sure, it would have taken a few years to get to that point, but hey, a free dinner is a free dinner...

    Tours
Rather than a tour, I prefer to pick up my Member Rewards Book each January, and look around to buy one or two other books you have for sale in your lobby.

    My Conversation With Anthony
I would say that most people if they visit the Huntington Press/LVA office find them quite pedestrian and nothing out of the ordinary.

However, I did get to meet Anthony once and engage in a short conversation that was very pleasant and memorable. I wish I had more time to talk to him at some point, but he does have a business to run. So rather than taking his time for my personal enjoyment, I would rather see him continue working on LVA to provide great value to all the other LV visitors.

    remembered
Earlier I was trying to recall the line from "Citizen Kane."

"I think it would be fun to run a newspaper."

Hope all of you feel the same way!

    Thanks to Anthony
I stopped by the office a couple of years ago and Anthony came down and talked to me for about five minutes. He would remember me as the one who asked him about a re-do of the famous Prime Rib review he did a long time ago.

I also got to meet Bob Dancer later in the week. I felt like a kid meeting a major league baseball player talking to those two.
