Question of the Day - 02 March 2023

Q:

Really enjoy watching LVA weekly updates, especially the Jackpot of the Week. What does it take to put on a video of this nature and who decides the subject matter, Anthony and Andrew or the whole staff?

A:

First off is the set (backdrop, table, chairs) and tech (cameras, microphones, editing computer, etc.). That all happens in an upstairs room in our office building and that's Andrew's domain; he's the video-production wing of the team.

Then comes the content, which is more Anthony's bailiwick. Very few people have their finger on the pulse of Las Vegas like Anthony does and he keeps his eyes and ears open for topics that he knows will be of the most interest to the most viewers. In addition, if something special is going on around town, he and Andrew make a plan to go "into the wild," as happened recently when two new casinos, the Wildfire on Boulder Highway and Los Ojos, the former Speedway in North Las Vegas, opened within a week of each other. And yes, Anthony also gets input from the staff, who sometimes have new information or a little different take on potential vlog topics.

Over the course of the show, it has evolved and matured into a loose but particular format. It mostly consists of the updates, which after all is the title, the "LVA YouTube Weekly Update," but also frequently veers off into tangential territory, such as tales about gambling and gamblers, stories from Anthony's present and past, places that Andrew visited in the past week, and the like. The detours make the show interesting and personal and keep it from being just a newscast.

Finally, the Jackpot of the Week is a favorite of everyone involved -- Anthony, Andrew, staff, and viewers. Jackpots do happen, all the time and to regular players, and they provide Anthony with a forum for analyzing the games, pay schedules, strategies, and luck/skill factor. They also render the show fittingly interactive.

But perhaps what makes the videos so enjoyable for the producers and the audience alike is the obvious way in which Anthony and Andrew relish their weekly on-camera interplay. It's evident that they both enjoy the process and each other and that results in a YouTube product that has become very popular and continues to grow in stature and status.

    No commercial interruptions
    I'm curious about something. I watch various and sundry YouTube videos from "content creators," as they say, and usually, the videos are interrupted every three or four minutes by multiple commercials for fur-lined condoms (or something). LVA's videos, however, are allowed to run uninterrupted. Is that the result of some deal LVA made? It seems like their default setting is an avalanche of commercials, so I'm wondering why thwhere aren't any on the updates, even though they're 10+ minutes long, which would normally get you at least four commercials.

    @Kevin Lewis
    I watch a lot of YouTube videos. I never see any interrupted in progress for ads as you wrote. Never. Several years ago, iirc, YouTube *did* try that on a small scale, but that extremely annoying scheme was short-lived, years ago, and only occurred on a small number of videos.

    Now, and for years, even hour-length videos in my viewing experience always run without interruption. Do you have an example of one that doesn't?

    Ads are inserted before the videos run (prerolls). Some video creators want to monetize their videos and share in the ad revenue of prerolls. Other creators don't but YT shows ads anyway, depending on various factors such as video content. Maybe gambling videos are not wholesome enough for YouTube to want to insert prerolls. They tend to stay away from controversial or "adult" vids and videos for little kids too, I think, so as not to be accused of exploiting young children's innocence & gullibility, not that many adults aren't incredibly gullible (See Fox News.).

    Re: The hosts
    The chemistry and contrast between Anthony and Andrew are what lend their videos their distinctive flavor, making them stand out from other Vegas info blogs and vlogs.

    Anthony has that low key "been there, done that" vibe while Andrew always seems to be more excited, since everything is so much newer to him than it is to Anthony. Also, imo, Andrew sometimes comes across as a bit of a huckster when discussing a restaurant or bar, while Anthony always critiques them without any hype in his restrained, laid-back manner.

    The combo makes for a great show, and I too wish the vids were longer.
