I've been seeing advertisements referring to the Major Series of Putting (MSOP) taking place in Vegas this fall. Is this something new? I've been following the PGA for years and I've never heard of this. Where in Vegas is this taking place?
The MSOP, the Major Series of Putting, is taking place in Las Vegas from October 27 to November 4 at a new stadium behind Planet Hollywood at 110 E. Harmon Avenue.
The MSOP is a subsidiary of a company called Lune Rouge Innovation, which was inspired and is controlled by Guy Laliberté, the Canadian billionaire who founded Cirque du Soleil. This is the first MSOP championship, consisting of professional and amateurs, men and women, who’ve either paid an entrance fee or earned a spot after competing in qualifying events around North America over the past year.
The stadium encompasses a 20,000-foot 18-hole putting course on artificial turf in a par-36 format, designed by Nicklaus Design, with grandstand seating, live leaderboards, big screens, a pro shop, and a sports bar. According to the MSOP website, “The Stadium promises to be the new mecca for the world of putting.”
The MSOP is the largest series of putting tournaments in history. These include singles and team events in stroke play and match play, with exclusive events for women, amateurs, and pro golfers. The biggest prize money is in a stroke-play championship with a $5,000 entry fee and an $825,000 payout.
All we can say is, the proof of the putting is in the competing.
