Question of the Day - 04 June 2019

Q:

I was wondering if there has been anymore progress on the opening of marijuana lounges. It’s nice to be able to buy recreational marijuana legally but it would be even nicer to have a place where a tourist could smoke it and not have to hide on an untraveled street or in a parking garage! I will be in Vegas for a big birthday at the end of June and I would be thrilled to smoke somewhere legally.

A:

The good news is, on May 2 of this year in a 4-1 vote, the Las Vegas City Council approved lounges for the consumption of cannabis.

For the first year, dispensaries licensed by the city, of which there are 12, will be the only businesses permitted to open lounges; they'll have to be approved individually by the Council, then pay a $5,000 annual fee. The lounges will have to meet odor standards and have plans for security, fire safety, and air quality and must be at least 1,000 feet from schools and casinos. Patrons must be 21 or older and bring their own product, though the lounges can sell paraphernalia.

Las Vegas is the first city in Nevada to approve pot lounges and one of only a few in the country that allows them, including San Francisco; Las Vegas city officials toured the San Francisco lounges in their research of the issue.

The bad news is, no timetable has been released for the licensing and inspection processes or any potential opening dates of the first pot lounges in the city.

Also, late last night, the Nevada Legislature approved a bill to create a Cannabis Compliance Board to oversee the pot industry; it's expected to prohibit cities and counties from legalizing and licensing pot lounges until it completes a study of the issue, which could take years. It's unclear, however, if the City of Las Vegas' new law will or won't be grandfathered.

    Edibles
While equally illegal to consume the stuff, at least when using edibles in your hotel room, you won’t incur a hefty cleaning charge as you would with smoking.

    Can buy but can't smoke?
I'm not a pot user so I haven't been paying attention. Am I taking the last paragraph out of context? You can buy pot but not use it in Nevada? Or do you have to be a resident? Or what? And there's no limit on how much you can buy? In CO I thought there was a limit. All very interesting.

    Use
Yeah, you can only use it on private property. And that excludes your hotel room. And anywhere else you may be thinking of.

Just what we need in a casino---a bunch of people high on Cannabis to add to the drunks.

    Wrong and wrong
The newly elected Governor is putting halt to the lounges, removing the cities ability to making laws concerning cannabis. Secondly you can not buy all you want, there are limits as to how much you can buy. I guess people will just keep breaking the law, bring back the speakeasies!

    already there
The "loaded" players are already there.... I've pretty much given it up..but the gummies seem to be the ideal way to get your THC...and know EXACTLY how much you're ingesting. I don't know what I'd have done in the 70's if those had been around.

    Prohibition?
Buy it but cannot smoke it? Dumb.
Buy alcohol but can't drink it?
Edibles are the way to go!
Smoke it in your own residence, but not in a car.Not in public.Stupid.
You can buy as much pot as you want in Seattle! The guys from Deadly Catch come down and buy thousands worth at a time.
Until lounges are approved and up and running,SPEAKEASIES will pop up everywhere.Las Vegas casinos know how to deal with the smoke,so there will be places to smoke.
Why not a pot lounge at the air port? There is a smokers lounge.
One can probably fire one up inside there. That place is DESIGNED to deal with smoke.
