I was wondering if there has been anymore progress on the opening of marijuana lounges. It’s nice to be able to buy recreational marijuana legally but it would be even nicer to have a place where a tourist could smoke it and not have to hide on an untraveled street or in a parking garage! I will be in Vegas for a big birthday at the end of June and I would be thrilled to smoke somewhere legally.
The good news is, on May 2 of this year in a 4-1 vote, the Las Vegas City Council approved lounges for the consumption of cannabis.
For the first year, dispensaries licensed by the city, of which there are 12, will be the only businesses permitted to open lounges; they'll have to be approved individually by the Council, then pay a $5,000 annual fee. The lounges will have to meet odor standards and have plans for security, fire safety, and air quality and must be at least 1,000 feet from schools and casinos. Patrons must be 21 or older and bring their own product, though the lounges can sell paraphernalia.
Las Vegas is the first city in Nevada to approve pot lounges and one of only a few in the country that allows them, including San Francisco; Las Vegas city officials toured the San Francisco lounges in their research of the issue.
The bad news is, no timetable has been released for the licensing and inspection processes or any potential opening dates of the first pot lounges in the city.
Also, late last night, the Nevada Legislature approved a bill to create a Cannabis Compliance Board to oversee the pot industry; it's expected to prohibit cities and counties from legalizing and licensing pot lounges until it completes a study of the issue, which could take years. It's unclear, however, if the City of Las Vegas' new law will or won't be grandfathered.
