Question of the Day - 21 April 2020

Q:

How are casinos going to handle gamblers wearing masks? Won’t that mess up facial recognition software?

A:

As a general rule, casinos disallow players from wearing masks. Previous to the shutdown, this was an issue only on Halloween. The pandemic has made it an issue in which health concerns are clashing with casino-security concerns, as the answer to your second question is, absolutely, masks would interfere with facial recogware. We'll be amazed if gamblers in Nevada casinos are required or even allowed to wear masks -- a security nightmare for the game protectors.

As such, the answer to your first question — how will the casinos handle mask-wearing gamblers? — is they won’t, because masks will probably be verboten. Last month, in a Washington state casino, and elderly couple wearing face masks were told that they either had to remove them or leave the property. Granted, this was when most health authorities were advising people that masks did little to prevent the spread of the virus. That opinion has since changed.

Are Macau’s casinos, which closed for 15 days in February and have been reopened since, any indication of upcoming policies for U.S. casinos? Let's take a look. In Macau, casino employees and players are required to wear face masks and gamblers who refuse are given the bum's rush. Macau’s casino patrons also have their temperatures taken upon entry and anyone running a fever is refused entry. Eating and drinking at the casino gaming tables is also now disallowed in Macau.

According to recent news reports and analyses, Las Vegas casinos are currently discussing reopening plans. Taking the temperature of all guests upon entering (a la Macau) and having dealers wearing masks both seem likely. Reducing the seats at gaming tables to keep guests farther apart will probably be in the plan. But we haven't seen any mention of allowing guests to wear masks, let alone requiring them to.

A number of Las Vegas hotel-casinos are taking room reservations starting on May 1, when the current shutdown is scheduled to conclude, so we're expecting to see some of these details in the near future. And if the governor gets involved, they'll most likely apply to all the casinos in Nevada.

    no mention of masks
Yesterday in Vegas News the CEO of Wynn Resorts said upon reopening "Masks for All"

    Gloves?
It wouldn't surprise me if the players handling chips start wearing gloves at the tables. Maybe even furnished by the casino.

    Temp
Taking temp is a bad way to say you can enter or not. My body temperature runs low normally 97.4 so to me 98.6 is high so I would be allowed entry but could be sick and contagious since Covid is associated with low grade fever around 100.

    New fee
    KennyA
You just gave the casino a new fee. $10 glove fee.

    Masks
I was also going to say Wynn CEO said masks for all. They'll have to fine tune the facial recognition software to focus on the eyes vs the entire face. I'm sure it can be done.

Required to wear mask will not make trip, too cumbersome, will wait.

    No Mask for Me
If players are required to wear masks, playing craps will be no fun. I will seriously consider delaying my Memorial Day arrival and full summer in Las Vegas until that requirement is removed.

    Gonna Wait
If masks aren't going to be allowed, then I'm just going to wait until there's a vaccine before coming to Vegas. Safety first!

    facial recognition?
Sometimes a decision comes down to which is more or less critical. If both are not possible, how critical is 'facial recognition' compared to the risk of disease transmission? How often does facial recognition come into play? If they have to let a few scofflaws in, how much is lost?

Personally I think the openings are too soon, driven by mass hysteria/cabin fever rioting. Gutless politicians opened the door, so they must back pedal or accept 'blame' when disease and deaths increase. The disease experts are clearly not in sync with this timing.

This isn't an ordinary disease outbreak. We have no immunity, yet. And it is deadly. People won't comply with distancing once let loose.

I doubt a mask requirement will fly. People won't keep them on, will drive staff crazy trying to enforce everything. Can players take the mask off to drink a drink? Smoke a cig? I predict Wynn will ditch that requirement in a day, or less.

    Masks and....
It isn’t just the masks that will keep us from our bi-yearly visit. No pools? That’s one of the main reasons we visit at all. We grew up in Seattle, live just north of there and being out in the sun by a pool (LOVE Bellagio’s) is a MUST. And no entertainment? I have been planning our trips around Sir Rods residency since he began in 2011, but were still visiting twice a year before he began. And then there’s the temperature thing. Been there many times when it’s 100 degrees.... I could go on and on. We are grateful we were there at the beginning of March just before this all got so bad. Take care all

    This answer is not accurate
"According to recent news reports and analyses, ... we haven't seen any mention of allowing guests to wear masks, let alone requiring them to."

On this site, in the Vegas News section 4/20/20 7:35 am, you wrote

"Assuming in mid- to late May we are still in line with the benchmarks, slowly begin to reopen the Las Vegas Strip with extensive safety measures in place: ... masks for all."

Both of those statements can't be true. Are you posting "Fake News" in the news section of the site, or are you not following current events when answering a time sensitive question?

    Face masks
Became immune compromised over a year ago, and have worn a mask at South Point once a week since. Have seen others with masks there too, and no one has said a word to me.

    no masks???
I understand the security concerns. That said, I am in a high risk group and unless/until there is a vaccine I won't be going to Las Vegas without being able to wear a mask.

I am fine taking a mask off for identification before going into the casino but will not play without a mask.

    Reply hazy, try again
This is one of those rare QoD's where the comments are far superior to LVA's answer.

I'd just add that taking the temperature of people arriving at casino doors in order to detect those who are contagious is problematic even though it is being promoted widely beyond Vegas casinos as a means of preventing the virus's spread.

The reason it's problematic is that the most recent data reveal that people are at their most contagious -- are shedding the most virus -- several days *before* they have symptoms of disease (like fever).

With no effective treatment, and no vaccine widely available for a minimum of a year and a half and probably much longer, predicting -- as Carolyn Goodman idiotically does -- that in a few weeks or in a few months that Vegas will return to anything like the way it was before is delusional. Vegas is at the very beginning of a new world, and one that does not look promising for a city that depends on gambling, restaurants, and shows for its lifeblood.

  • PackerBackerAZ Apr-21-2020
    not totally preventative
Unless you have an airtight mask you can still breathe in the virus. Does it help keep your breath from putting out maximum droplets? Probably. Keeping protected from each other as much as possible(wearing a mask and social distancing) is all that can be done. Without taking the precautions expect a huge second wave!

    Elastic, the new TP?
I'm told today there is no elastic left on shelves, as in the kind to make your own masks with. Nor those elastic thingys for the scrunchie/pony tail. My neighbor used some stretchy fabric, like tee shirt material, for the ear loops.

Today Ellen showed several novel (no pun intended) ideas for face protection during an elastic shortage. One guy wore a huge thick plastic bag over his whole body, with something like a pipe sticking out the top, for air I suppose. Another guy had what Ellen called a "Maskie Pad" sealed across his face. A feminine hygiene item (ladies, ya'll know them if you leak when you sneeze), thin enough but large size enough to cover his nose and mouth. Would Wynn approve? I hope those aren't hoarded and become endangered like elastic and toilet paper. Us older gals would be in trouble. LOL.

    Masks in casinos
I'm normally in Vegas at least 6-8 times a year. I have seen people wearing masks numerous times in both Locals and Strip casinos.

    Some people
I guess some people don't know that they don't write these things first thing in the morning on the day they are released. I don't know exactly when this was written but I am sure it was before YESTERDAY when all of the stuff being quoted was said.

  • Annie Apr-22-2020
    @Kevin Rough
That's a good point, but LVA writers can and should edit the copy that they wrote in advance when it becomes inaccurate, irrelevant to current conditions or otherwise stale.

For several weeks after social distancing became the order of the day, LVA continued to run QoDs as if nothing had changed. Anthony Curtis wrote that was because there were a lot of QoDs already in the pipeline. As if he couldn't have scrapped questions about 6:5 BJ or who has the best buffet
after all table games and restaurants had closed with no predicted ETA for their resumption.

    Face masks?
If the casinos require face masks to be worn that's going to amount to the same thing as having a no-smoking policy. Can't smoke while wearing a mask. That would be a huge change for Vegas casinos.
