Question of the Day - 17 June 2026

Q:

In a recent QOD, it was stated that if a matchplay coupon is restricted to even-money bets, blackjack is a good game to play. What happens if the player is dealt a blackjack? I'm guessing they would get 3-2 on their chip and even money on the match chip. Or would they just get even money on the whole bet?

A:

Good guess!

The standard payout on a matchplay coupon for a natural blackjack is the bonus for the natural, either 3-2 or 6-5, on the base bet. Then you're paid even-money on the coupon.

If your dealer pays the bonus on both the bet and coupon, take it. If he or she tries to pay even money on both, raise a fuss. The way to do that is to call over a floor supervisor, who'll almost certainly know the rule. If not, keep escalating until someone shows up who does.

    Splits and doubles
Make sure you have plenty of cash/chips handy - using a $25 matchplay you can easily lay out over $100 from your pocket when you split and then double…

    Splits
Pretty much count on getting a pair of eights against a dealer 10. Then split and get two or three more eights…

...and wind up with six hands, each totaling 18. Dealer flips a 9 just because that hurts a smidge more.

A story as old as time, yet I tend to forget it in the moment.

    Splits
I had a similar situation, only without the benefit of a matchplay. Dealt a pair of 8's against a dealer 14. Split the 8's, got a ten on the first 8, and another 8 on the second. Split a second time, got a ten on the first one and another 8 on the second. Split a third time, and again got a ten on the first card, and a 2 on the second card. Now I double down, and get a 7 on the second card for another 18. At this point, I had most of my bankroll on the table. Outcome - dealer bust. I felt relief more than victory.

    splits it is
Took my coupon to the downtown Grand a put down $50 on the table. Got a pair of 8's. Dealer had a 6. Threw down another $50 to split. Got a 3 on the 1st hand. Threw down another $50 to double. Got a 2. 2nd hand got a 9,stayed. Dealer turned over a 10 then pulled a 5. Walked to the cart and got my $3 beer and dog. Hit the D, threw down my coupon and $25. Got a 16 and busted. Great coupon! LOL
