Question of the Day - 15 June 2018

Q:

If we see Anthony Curtis around town, does he mind if we go over and say hi?

A:

We get this question from time to time. We answered it four years ago, but a recent experience prompted us to take it on again.

We were trying Hell’s Kitchen for our dinner review in the April issue of the Las Vegas Advisor and even though it was prime time and the joint was jumpin’, the night manager came over and made a big fuss over Anthony. “You’re the reason I came here!” he enthused. “I was living in Hawaii, kept seeing you on television, and said to myself, Las Vegas is cool. I think I’ll move there.”

This happens pretty frequently when we’re out and about with him; it’s notable how many Vegas visitors recognize him from television appearances and his picture in the papers.

Some people aren't sure exactly who he is and he regularly hears, “I know I know you from somewhere.” A.C. also tells the story of walking through a supermarket parking lot when a guy looked up, pointed, and said simply, "Coupon man."

Obviously, some times are less convenient than others, but in those cases, he'll explain that he’s on his way to an appointment or otherwise engaged (he has to make so many stops, he’s usually in a hurry), so don't take it personally.

Here's Anthony's take:

"I get stopped all the time and I'm always happy to talk to LVA members. Sometimes people want to take a photo. Sometimes they want me to sign their Member Rewards Book. Most often, they simply want to say hello and tell me what bargain or hidden gem they’ve discovered lately. Some come right up to me, without hesitation, even if I'm in the middle of a conversation with someone over dinner, while others simply smile or nod.

“I confess, I often wonder why people get such a kick out of these things, but I'm always happy to oblige and customers shouldn’t feel like they’re putting me out. I also learn a lot from these interactions — things members like or don't like about LVA, suggestions they have for new features or from their shared insights and observations from around the city, or to relate a positive (or otherwise) experience they may have had with one of our partner restaurants or casinos -- so that’s another reason I like meeting and talking to people."

Bottom line: By all means walk up and introduce yourself. It’s all in a day’s work for the Las Vegas Advisor.

    My meet with Mr. Curtis
I did not know Mr. Curtis except by reputation. Never met him. I was at Huntington Press to buy a book and asked the receptionist if Mr. Curtis would sign it for me and I would pick it up in a day or two. She picked up the phone and down the stairs from his office he came and introduced himself. What a gracious accommodating interesting man. We chatted for quite awhile talking about our humble beginnings in Atlantic City. We're about the same age and were in AC about the same time not knowing each other. He was more interested in me, my insights, input and feedback than I ever expected. What a charming individual. I left his office feeling like a I had just reconnected with an old friend. AC, Thanks for the memories!

    just like Oscar!
Anthony sounds like Oscar Goodman. While he was Mayor, I ran into him twice (once with Carolyn, once without), and he was the friendliest man you could meet even though I am not a local. I look forward to maybe running into Anthony (and maybe even some of the rest of you contributors) in the near future.

    AC
Had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Mr. Curtis twice. Once we were crossing the street to the Downtown Grand Another time at the Gold Coast. He was very friendly. Wish he would hire Paul Wilson an excellent writer and a low rolling gambler like many of us. I think he would add a lot to this publication. He use to write for the Blackjack Insider. Always had the dimension of humor and a gamblers interest.

    Anthony Curtis v. Arnold Snyder
I am happy to learn that Anthony Curtis is friendly towards LVA members. I had suspicions that he might be otherwise. That suspicion was caused by Anthony's giving his seal of approval to Arnold Snyder, a frequent and frequently hostile LVA contributor, who can't write three sentences without snarling at someone, often an innocent QoD questioner

    Mountain West Tournament
I was at the basketball tournament a few years ago and had just watched SDSU narrowly beat UNLV. While walking out of the Thomas & Mack arena I saw Anthony Curtis. Thinking he might be upset at the loss, I almost walked right by him. Instead I just gave him a nod and said thanks for the Las Vegas Advisor. To my surprise he stopped dead in his tracks, extended his hand and shook it, thanking me for saying so. Class act.
