If we see Anthony Curtis around town, does he mind if we go over and say hi?
We get this question from time to time. We answered it four years ago, but a recent experience prompted us to take it on again.
We were trying Hell’s Kitchen for our dinner review in the April issue of the Las Vegas Advisor and even though it was prime time and the joint was jumpin’, the night manager came over and made a big fuss over Anthony. “You’re the reason I came here!” he enthused. “I was living in Hawaii, kept seeing you on television, and said to myself, Las Vegas is cool. I think I’ll move there.”
This happens pretty frequently when we’re out and about with him; it’s notable how many Vegas visitors recognize him from television appearances and his picture in the papers.
Some people aren't sure exactly who he is and he regularly hears, “I know I know you from somewhere.” A.C. also tells the story of walking through a supermarket parking lot when a guy looked up, pointed, and said simply, "Coupon man."
Obviously, some times are less convenient than others, but in those cases, he'll explain that he’s on his way to an appointment or otherwise engaged (he has to make so many stops, he’s usually in a hurry), so don't take it personally.
Here's Anthony's take:
"I get stopped all the time and I'm always happy to talk to LVA members. Sometimes people want to take a photo. Sometimes they want me to sign their Member Rewards Book. Most often, they simply want to say hello and tell me what bargain or hidden gem they’ve discovered lately. Some come right up to me, without hesitation, even if I'm in the middle of a conversation with someone over dinner, while others simply smile or nod.
“I confess, I often wonder why people get such a kick out of these things, but I'm always happy to oblige and customers shouldn’t feel like they’re putting me out. I also learn a lot from these interactions — things members like or don't like about LVA, suggestions they have for new features or from their shared insights and observations from around the city, or to relate a positive (or otherwise) experience they may have had with one of our partner restaurants or casinos -- so that’s another reason I like meeting and talking to people."
Bottom line: By all means walk up and introduce yourself. It’s all in a day’s work for the Las Vegas Advisor.
