Question of the Day - 26 February 2019

Q:

With 2019 being the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Mirage, has MRI announced any special plans/celebrations?

A:

While we suspect the answer to your question would be a resounding “no,” MGM Resorts International’s silence on the issue is perhaps more telling than anything it could say. The company let the 25th silver anniversary of the Mirage pass without commemoration, so we're convinced it will be no different this year.

Saluting the Mirage raises a matrix of issues. It’s not a property that MGM built; rather, they bought it from a competitor. It's also not one of the company’s top performers: MGM prefers to emphasize its own Grand, Aria, and Park MGM and downplay most of its acquired properties, with the notable exception of Mandalay Bay.

Also, by hailing the Mirage, MGM would — by implication — be giving a shout-out to Steve Wynn, now disgraced in Las Vegas and one who is so uncharacteristically quiet, you'd be forgiven for thinking he's entered a witness-protection program. MGM CEO Jim Murren likes his company to be thought of as progressive and cleaner than a hound’s tooth. Bringing up a history-making Wynn accomplishment isn't the way to look spic ’n span.

Besides, the casino industry in general is allergic to nostalgia. It wants you thinking about the next nice, bright, and shiny new thing, not whatever old relic it displaces, however fond. Now that the Mirage has devolved into a mid-market property, don’t expect anyone to roll out an anniversary cake for it.

    nothing for Bellagio
We are Bellagio regulars, and by happenstance stayed there almost to the day of several 'anniversaries.' Staff would mention it when we chatted. No hoopla that we were aware of.

I suppose dealers get tired of the question "So how long have you worked at Bellagio?" [or any casino] That is often how it would come up about the anniversary years.

Early on, Bellagio dealers were proud to answer the question, many coming from Mirage and Treasure Island, glad they had made the move, etc.

If you knew Bellagio in the beginning, you felt the sea change after Steve Wynn's 'departure.' When he mandated sharing of dealer tips with the pit at Wynn, Bellagio dealers were p***ed about it (word travels fast), in solidarity with Wynn dealers. But I digress.

Has it really been 30 years?
in June 1989, I drove down the Strip past the huge bulk of the Mirage under construction. I was properly impressed, saying something like, "[expletive deleted], that's a big [colorful descriptive term]." Little did I know that some day it would be described as a "mid-market property."

I think it was the first place I heard described as a "meta-resort," as opposed to a mere mega-resort; but I'm having trouble finding a full definition of the term on Google. And if it was the first metaresort, it sure wasn't the last. It marked the beginning of Las Vegas' transition into the big time. Whether that is a good thing is still open to discussion.

After it opened, I actually went to the Mirage once and was properly sensorily overloaded; but we passed on Siegfried and Roy because we'd seen them a year or two before at the Frontier and the price was a little high. Never actually stayed there, and I seem to remember that the Blackjack was unplayable even then, long before 6-5.

    Celebration for the 25th Anniversary
The Mirage actually did commemorate their 25th anniversary - at least internally. A very large, and quite nice in my opinion, mural was created and displayed in the employee only corridor that leads out to the area between the registration desk/1OAK area. I have pics if it somewhere in my archives. Not sure if they'll do anything do celebrate the 30th, but I know they made a nice effort to commemorate their 25th - at least for their staff to enjoy.
