With 2019 being the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Mirage, has MRI announced any special plans/celebrations?
While we suspect the answer to your question would be a resounding “no,” MGM Resorts International’s silence on the issue is perhaps more telling than anything it could say. The company let the 25th silver anniversary of the Mirage pass without commemoration, so we're convinced it will be no different this year.
Saluting the Mirage raises a matrix of issues. It’s not a property that MGM built; rather, they bought it from a competitor. It's also not one of the company’s top performers: MGM prefers to emphasize its own Grand, Aria, and Park MGM and downplay most of its acquired properties, with the notable exception of Mandalay Bay.
Also, by hailing the Mirage, MGM would — by implication — be giving a shout-out to Steve Wynn, now disgraced in Las Vegas and one who is so uncharacteristically quiet, you'd be forgiven for thinking he's entered a witness-protection program. MGM CEO Jim Murren likes his company to be thought of as progressive and cleaner than a hound’s tooth. Bringing up a history-making Wynn accomplishment isn't the way to look spic ’n span.
Besides, the casino industry in general is allergic to nostalgia. It wants you thinking about the next nice, bright, and shiny new thing, not whatever old relic it displaces, however fond. Now that the Mirage has devolved into a mid-market property, don’t expect anyone to roll out an anniversary cake for it.
