Question of the Day - 08 June 2023

Q:

How often does the Mob Museum change their displays?

A:

By now, everyone knows that the Mob Museum, officially the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, in downtown Las Vegas is one of the city's most special and unique attractions. Opened in 2012, it welcomed its three millionth visitor in November 2022, dividing out to right around 25,000 a month or roughly 830 per day.

To answer this question, we went directly to the source, long-time local journalist-editor and Vice President of Exhibits and Programs, Geoff Schumacher. He tells us, "The Mob Museum's permanent exhibits are in a constant state of evolution. We correct errors, tighten and update narratives, and introduce new artifacts on an ongoing basis.

"As far as major new exhibits, the frequency of installation varies from year to year, but we strive to introduce at least two new storylines per year.

"The Mob Museum currently doesn't have a temporary exhibition space, so there's no set schedule for traveling or special exhibits to appear."

We might add that the museum is far more than just its exhibits. It also features the Underground speakeasy and distillery, a cool little shop that sells books, toys and games, and collectors items, numerous special events, a fun "nickname generator" (this writer's is "Shorty," even though he's six-two), and weddings and private parties.

    Museum Thoughts
I visited the museum two months ago and was very impressed. The museum opens with some socioeconomic themes regarding the why of the American mob(s), and proceeds through the history, closing with an emphasis on modern law enforcement. The classic Oscar Goodman video where he defends his work comes about halfway through. Much more to this museum than one might think.

    Tourist Trap
At $29.95 just another Vegas "attraction" that doesn't live up to the hype. Very little information or exhibits I had not heard or seen before in other places. I would rather visit the Bonnie and Clyde Death car and its history again as opposed to this place.

    Mob / Neon Museums
I visited the Mob Museum a couple of years back and it was fascinating and well done. I purchased a combo ticket which included the Neon Museum but be warned if you are walking from Mob to Neon: although a reasonable walking distance, it's pretty sketchy at night. Lots of "interesting" characters, some yelling random thoughts your way. :-)
