Question of the Day - 11 May 2021

Q:

When is the Monorail going to reopen?

A:

In mid-March, the Nevada Department of Business and Industry approved plans submitted by the organizers of the World of Concrete convention to hold the first large-scale trade show since the shutdown 12-plus months earlier. We haven't heard anything since to the contrary, and the World Market Show hosted thousands in April, so it looks like the concrete convention will take place as scheduled June 8-10.

At that time, several pieces to the recovery puzzle will be falling into place.

First, the Convention Center will debut its new West Hall, the $1 billion expansion out to the Strip on the property of the former Riviera.

Second, Boring Company's Las Vegas Loop will begin operations, shuttling attendees around the Convention Center.

And third, by then, the Las Vegas Monorail should have resumed service. According to several sources, the Monorail will, if all goes according to plan, be back in business on Monday May 31, which is also Memorial Day. That should give it a week, before World of Concrete, to iron out any kinks that might have crept into the system over the 14-plus months that the system was mothballed, during which it changed ownership from the original Monorail company to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

When will someone (Musk, convention center, "Anthony Curtis") be smart enough to build the monorail in the center of the strip (above or below) so many more people will ride it?

    It's official: Thu. May 27
Directly from lvmonorail.com this morning comes this announcement:

All Aboard—The Las Vegas Monorail Is Back!

Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, we're thrilled to announce that Las Vegas Monorail will reopen starting 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 27, 2021! We will resume previous operating hours and ticketing options, so you can skip the traffic and get to your destination on the Las Vegas Strip in less than 15 minutes. It's good to be back!

What safety guidelines will be in place to keep riders safe?
As we reopen, our team is taking extra precautions to protect your health and safety. To ensure the system remains clean and sanitized, face masks will be required at all times, hand sanitizer will be available at every Monorail station and riders are encouraged to maintain social distancing when possible.

I've said the same 20 years ago. Original monorail was great going from MGM TO Ballys and back but when they announced back then it was going all the down to the Sahara, I'd figured it needed to be on the street side for people to ride it. My opinion, which i think is true to some extent, no one wants to walk from the street to all the way to the back of a hotel to ride the monorail and when the get to their destination, then have to walk all the way back to the street/strip.

I now see why the monorail was never extended to the airport. There was too much money to be lost from the rental car company taxes and fees. It's ridiculous what a car rents for now.

    @Shurk
I think it’s far more likely that the taxi firms would lobby against any extension to the airport rather than the car rental companies.

Anyone visiting Vegas to party (including drinking copious amounts of which I, on numerous occasions, have been known to do) is much less likely to want to rent a car just to drive to a hotel and back.

Whereas if a trip from the airport costs a minimum of $20ish in a taxi compared to $5 on the monorail guess which one a lot of travellers would choose if they could?
