Question of the Day - 15 May 2024

Q:

Questions. We get lots and lots of questions.

A:

In your Top Ten, it's mentioned that there's a coupon for the buffet at the Palms, but I can't find it. Where is it?

We're glad you asked. Actually, we receive this question fairly frequently. It gives us a chance to shine a spotlight on our Member Rewards Online (MRO) offers. These are coupons that aren't included in the Member Rewards Book, but are available to be printed out from the website and redeemed in the same way as the MRB's. Currently, the Rio's 30% off room deal, with no resort fee, is an MRO, as is the Palms' A.Y.C.E. Buffet coupon. There are also 22 other coupons for dining, entertainment, drinking, and gambling. Be sure to read the Details; some of the coupons expire before the end of the year, while others have special redemption instructions. For the Palms buffet, for example, you have to bring your coupon to the Club Serrano booth for validation, then redeem the voucher at the buffet cashier. Also, you must redeem the coupon within 30 days of printing it out.

I have a question of the day about the Question of the Day. When I'm not logged in, it says to log in to rate or comment. What does the "rate" part mean?

Like many online feedback systems, LVA members can write comments and, on some of the category pages, add a rating, from one to five stars. There's no rating function for Question of the Day, but if you go to our buffet and hotel sections, you'll see the five stars in the upper-right-hand corner of the comment box. Click on one of the stars and you've added a rating.

I’ve been to Las Vegas over 50 times and still love it, but was thinking of Reno (never been there) as something different. Do you have a sister site, like Reno Advisor?

No. We don't. We've thought about it from time to time over the years and once even met with a Reno mover and shaker (way back in the mid-'90s) who wanted us to initiate one. However, it wasn't feasible at the time and has grown less so ever since. There might have been a market for a Reno Advisor back then, but the casino business there has shrunk considerably in the past few decades and our opinion is that an Advisor periodical, website, and coupon book for Reno would be a struggle to launch, maintain, and make a profit on.

    Agree 100%
Heck, it's hard enough for y'all to make a buck on the LVA, and getting good offers for the MBR is a grind year in, year out. There is just not enough gaming or interest in Reno to make that a viable business.

    Printing Coupons
I'm a CPA and mostly prepare tax returns. I find it incredible how many of my clients don't own a functioning printer. I'm sent so many PDFs to print for them. Bugs me because it's time and money, but I do add to my fee if it's warranted. I have to wonder how many here do not have printers, making this option void (unless you go elsewhere to print it, say a library or family member's home, eg).

    how is it possible?
I recall some acquaintences saying that all year they placed "everything" that would relate to their tax return in a certain folder or even a sack! to take to their tax preparer to sort out. What?????

I was always amazed. I have always spent hours, days organizing what I would take to my tax preparer. Granted, to this day I fuss at myself for not starting this task sooner, as I stress over it every year, but I have it well lined up in time, some of my own interpretation of what might be necessary. Setting a date with the to meet with the person helps move me forward. I make my own copies of everything, wouldn't dream of showing up without having them. Sheesh.

    Palms coupon problem
Went to Palms buffet Sunday evening. Printed coupon before I left for Vegas. Went to the Club booth for validation. No problem. Go to the AYCE line, it is long. 2 hours later get up to pay, cashier said that coupon could not be honored, claimed that it was Mother's Day, so it was a holiday and coupon was not allowed on holidays. So now I have a worthless piece of paper, since it has to be used within 30 days and I am now back home.

Damn, we hate to hear that. Whoever validated your coupon at the players club booth should have informed you that it wouldn't be accepted on Mother's Day. We'll reissue the coupon for you if you like. The problem is you might already be in the Palms' system after validating at the booth. In the event that's the case, if you want to use the coupon again, we'll send someone over to meet you and secure the discount. You can call us and ask for Tanya to arrange. Sorry for the rough experience.

    The Reno Advisor
Reno is exploding, both as a gaming market and a burgeoning city. Meanwhile, Vegas is actively endeavoring to drive people away and to squeeze every last shekel out of those who can't be dissuaded. Reno (particularly during Vegas Inferno Season) is a worthwhile alternative and quite frankly, much, much, much cheaper and more pleasant to visit. The gambling is MUCH better in Reno, and the area has many other diversions and attractions in addition to gambling.

So IMHO there's more than adequate room and demand for an RA, especially as Vegas as a viable vacation destination continues to shrivel up.

    Reno? Ha!
Love Reno, and would possibly consider moving there to retire.
That being said, one only needs to compare the number of casinos in each city.
Vegas, is hands down the best gambling destination in the world, and as John said, it's hard enough trying to make it with the LVA, let alone the RVA.

    Re: Printing coupons
Don't despair if you haven't printed it out at home. On our recent trip to LV, we had planned to use the Palms AYCE coupon, and when I couldn't find it in the book, I realized it was on-line. I stopped in at the concierge desk at the hotel, and she helped me figure out a way I could download it to my phone and send it to her for printing. Where there's a will (or a 2-4-1 coupon), there's a way! I agree with you, Sandra Ritter, I don't know how people function without a home printer.

I'm also a tax accountant, and I agree with you about people not having a printer being a source of frustration. Another thing that maddens me is people who send me snapshots of things instead of scan-and-email or e-fax. "No, I can't read it, it's a crumpled, out-of-focus piece of paper!"

    imploding
Reno is "exploding", lol. What decade-century are you living in old timer? LVA I think stated reality on the topic. This ain't the 70's-80's-90's.

We know you hate las vegas but give it a rest, stick to facts and reality as a starter. The younger and middle aged generations with the most disposable income love it, for many reasons beyond gaming, as do we. Your $1.99 breakfast special mentality, circa 1980's, left a long time ago, get used to it. Lastly, try staying in a world class 5 star hotel in any big city vs las vegas, even with resort fees and parking included. Las Vegas is a downright bargain in comparison.

    Reno coupons
I suggest that a few Reno/Lake Tahoe Casino coupons could be included in the present coupon book (if you’re innovative enough, staff). You could , at least, add some to the online coupons. After all, it’s 2024, and we beat Covid-19, meaning that innovation works. It doesn’t have to be but one or two coupons offered. I’m just saying.

    YES TO RENO/TAHOE
I'm a longtime LVA member, and have lived in the Reno/Tahoe area for the past 8 years. There's a lot happening now; Tahoe will soon be getting some multi-million dollar updates to its major casinos, the old Cal-Neva in Tahoe will soon reopen, a new Biltmore brand Tahoe casino in north shore is underway, the Golden Nugget took over the Hard Rock, and Reno is FULL of cool new restaurants in its emerging Mid-Town arts district.
We deserve some coupons/action in the LVA book if we can't have our own.
