Question of the Day - 16 February 2024

Q:

Does LVA collect any data on the redemption rate of MRB coupons? It would be interesting to know which coupons are most popular and least  popular with members. There are some coupons that I use every year, some that I use if get a chance, and some that I’ve never used …

A:

We don't collect data, but we do have a sense, from customer (and to a lesser extent casino) feedback, of the relative popularity of the coupons in the Member Rewards Book.

The one we hear the most about is the 2-for-1 to the Palms buffet. Which is as it should be, as it's what we call the "master coupon," the one that by itself (a $65 value) recoups the entire cost of membership with some change thrown in. Also, since it's for the greatest seafood buffet in Las Vegas, it provides an excellent story to take home: all the lobster you can eat for $35 or so apiece!

Otherwise, the second-most-loved coupon is the one that waives the most hated fee, the Downtown Grand's room rate minus the resort fee.

And of course, the free-play coupons are ever-popular; who doesn't like free money? The matchplays are similar, especially among the harder-core gamblers (since there's some risk involved with those).

Two downtown restaurants are also noteworthy for their esteem with members: Binion's Steakhouse and Magnolia's at the Four Queens.

In the end, they're all great values and available nowhere else. Anyone who arrives in Las Vegas without a Member Rewards Book is a sucker of the first degree.

We'd love to hear from QoDers which coupons you like the most. Maybe we'll even run a poll to collect the data.

Value of just the Downtown coupons
I usually stay downtown at the Four Queens, so using the downtown casino coupons is a no-brainer.

The gambling coupons easily exceed the cost of the MRB.

Heck, the value of just the dining coupons available for downtown is worth the MRB.

And there's still the Palms coupon - again, worth more than the MRB.

So yes, showing up to Las Vegas sans the MRB is foolish.

I don't go too far out of the way to use non-Downtown coupons. Only ones that I do use is Ellis Island when I'm there to get the steak special, obviously the Palms, and strangely, Crown and Anchor. (The wife loves the Yorkshire Pudding and the Scotch Eggs.)

Now if LVA can get Herbs & Rye and/or Morning News...

    Best Money I Spend
The LVA membership is the best money I spend all year. I use all of the Ellis Island coupons without fail. Plus many more.

King of Bovines is correct, Four Queens is a great value with no resort fees and free parking. Be sure to stay in the South tower in a quiet room on the south or west side of the building.

Top of Binions Scallops were fantastic.
El Cortez Siegels Steak and Eggs are tasty and fast.
Magnolias Wings don't last long with us.

Has LVA considered having LV Monorail coupon? I use it extensively to hit the convention center.

    Value
I stay downtown without a car, so for me there is quite a bit of value in the MRB. For those who stay on strip mostly unless they travel outside there with (or without a car but the taxi/uber fees eat into the value) I can see why they would not bother.

    Free Parking
Would love to see some free parking coupons added to the mix. Maybe LVA could get some of the hard core casinos that aren't in the book with a free parking voucher. That would basically get people into the property without giving up anything. Something that would get scanned on the way in or out? I would especially like to see it at the Plaza and Gold Nugget.

    Good ol' Ellis Island
I hit the BBQ joint, and while waiting, pick up the slot free play. Makes for an almost free meal that's one of the best in town at any price. That chicken...them ribs ..

    Don't leave home without it!
My favorite coupons by far are the match play coupons. The higher the denomination the better. Secondly, it's the restaurants. As was stated the one at the Palms was superlative. But what's great is as I'm going around playing the coupons I have so many choices of where to eat. You're never sure exactly where you're going to be.I always have a plan. As a matter of fact, I just got through planning my vacation for this April.I used to always get the American casino guide.I used to cut out the coupons and put them in little envelopes with the area noted on them. That was a great book, but the compactness of the member rewards coupon book is so great. You just have it in your pocket so wherever you are you can swing over to this restaurant or that and get a great deal on a great wheel. I don't know how many years it's been, but it's been a lot except for 2019 when I skipped my trip, I have gone to The D bought a beer at the bar and had my two Coney Island Dogs.

    Popular coupons
I agree that the Palmb buffet is the best coupon — followed for me by Magnolia’s and the match plays. In the past, buffet coupons were always the ones I would use first and always. A side note, at the end of my December visit, I always leave the coupon book (with plenty of local options) for the housekeeper at my hotel. It’s my hope that a few more get used. Finally, YES to a poll. I’m always curious what other LVAers think and do.

    MRB Coupons
The one coupon that I really liked is the one for 2 glasses of champagne at the top of Circa at the Legacy Club. Having the glass of it out on the outside patio/balcony with that super view of Las Vegas is breathtaking.

    cupons
As a single that so many cupons are two for one is a downer. But plenty of good value still.

    Triple George
My wife and I just used the Triple George coupon at Downtown Grand. This is one of our favorite coupons. $75 gets you $100 worth of food. We each get something to eat there ( their chicken pot pie is killer) then each get something to take home for another meal. Four meals for $75- a good deal in Las Vegas. Oh, and a bonus feature of this- they validate your parking also, so the coupon is worth even more!

    Thank You!
I appreciate you answering the question I submitted! As a “data” guy I’m surprised that the casinos aren’t doing/sharing any analysis on their coupons. Specifically I would think they would want to know if these coupons are driving a benefit to the casino. For me there are some that I usually “hit and run” and others that drive me to spend significant time and money in other places. Funnily enough I haven’t used the “master coupon” at Palms the past few years. To me the “master coupons” are the $5-100 slot bonus at The D and Golden Gate. I always max those out for $200 value and use the comps I earn to get a Detroit-style pizza at Pizza Rock. :-)

    Downtown Grand
As the Downtown Grand resort fee coupon is excellent, just a word for Nevada locals. The Downtown Drand resort fee is waived for locals. We have stayed there many times, and even ran into Anthony and said hello the last time there. Keep up the great work LVA!

The coupon I miss the most is....
I wish Ellis Island would figure out a way to bring back the "Three free drunks for two" coupon. I wonder if the bartenders miss it too because we tipped them every time we got one of the free drinks. Do you think people "STIFFING" them might have had something with it????

    Triple George
If it weren't for LVA, I may never have stopped in The Triple. George. Scott is right. They validate parking.

    Favorite Coupons
Since we gamble enough both on the strip and downtown, we get comped rooms and are usually high enough tier levels to not pay resort fees so I don't think I've ever used a room coupon. We used to focus on the food coupons, especially 2:1 buffet's, but even the comped food we get doesn't make those as valuable. We even get comped dining at the Palms so that one doesn't do much for us. However, we still occasionally use a dining coupon to try something new in a casino or location we don't frequent. We were using the show coupons for a while, but we've seen them all now.

For me, it's all about the gambling coupons. I did spend one trip just driving around using every gaming coupon I had and ONLY playing the amount needed on that coupon to see what I could take home. After I was done, I think I covered my gas but that was it. It still a lot of fun to visit casino's I wouldn't normally have visited.

For future books, it would fun to see coupons for other experiences like Area15!

    What is LVA doing?
How can LVA not be collecting coupon use information from its casino partners? That’s just business malpractice. If a coupon isn’t widely used it should be junked; if a coupon is redeemed by a large percentage of LVA members then it should be leveraged to other coupons at that property.

    Oops!
Just remember to take the coupon book out of your glove compartment in your car.
