Question of the Day - 10 February 2024

Q:

Why are the coupons provided in the Member Rewards Coupon Book voided when detached from the booklet? I prefer to take just the coupons I need at the moment and leave the rest of the book in the hotel.

A:

Good question. Simple answer.

The reason is to prevent counterfeiting.

Back when detached coupons were valid, scammers and scufflers, of whom there are legions in Las Vegas, bought an LVA subscription, acquired the coupon book, photocopied the coupons, and used them over and over. And over and over. Coupons that are pre-detached from the book are, for all intents and purposes, indistinguishable from counterfeits.

This went on long enough and raised enough ire and angst among participating casinos that we had to institute the new policy: Coupons must be detached in the presence of the cashier or casino representative redeeming them.

We believe, and QoDers can weigh in on the subject, that having to carry the coupon book (which used to be called the Pocketbook of Values, since it fits pretty nicely in a pocket or purse) is a small price to pay for the discounts. Without the policy, we know that many casinos would no longer be participants in our coupon program.

    Emotionally detached
I personally find the LVA book to be a little too large to comfortably carry in my pocket. But that's one of the sacrifices I make for couponomy.

As far as redemption goes...it would completely stop counterfeiting if the coupons themselves couldn't be used, but could be exchanged at the players' club for a usable coupon. Then you could in fact pre-detach them--duplication/counterfeiting wouldn't work, as the casino could easily enforce the one per customer per year limit.

Oh, and if you tried to get an unlawful second lobster coupon, security could take you downstairs to be boiled alive.

    online coupons
will be interesting to see if the palms coupon comes back then after making it an online coupon... Whilst you may only be able to print it once off the website the print to file option is still available so in essence you can print unlimited coupons

    Why not
Create an app? You carry your phone anyway...

  • Edso Feb-10-2024
    Good idea Vegas Fan
In this age where you can order on apps, why not have an LVA Member Rewards Coupon App, and it gets scanned when you go to the restaurant, slot club (for match play or free slot play), etc.

I don't mind carrying the book, but this is a really good idea.

    Personal experience
My gambling partner and I often each have our own coupon book and have occasionally shared a coupon the other didn't want to use. We went up together to the players club at once casino and I was sort of surprised, but then, not really surprised, that when I tried to redeem a gambling coupon from my partners book, the casino said I had already used it. The casino was cool about it as I did have the entire book with me, so they know it wasn't counterfeit. I'm also guessing I'm not the only one to try using 2 coupons in the same year. That makes me think the casinos do have some way of tracking coupon use, but I'm sure others would still find ways to cheat the system.

I may be mistaken but aren't you allowed to buy 2 books per year? I assumed that you could use both if you did. Maybe someone will clear that up for us.

    e-Coupons
I am usually a late adopter of technology, so I have only recently become a fan of the digital "wallet" on my phone. (My husband is still hopelessly analog though.) I like the idea of digitizing the coupon book for our convenience, which would also save LVA printing and shipping costs. But wouldn't the casinos have to make some technological changes as well to be able to scan the coupons?

  • Deke Castleman Feb-10-2024
    Debra
Exactly! We've been wanting to go digital with the coupons for years, but the partner casinos have been reticent, to put it mildly. It's difficult enough to coordinate the paper coupons without introducing a whole technological element to the process. Thank you for pointing that out.

    Coupons
Years ago they published an American Casino Guide book with casino information listed by state and maps. Also they had coupons and in the actual book, a card that you had to use when you redeemed, not having to take the whole book with you. So, you could take the card and the coupons and that was all you need. I found it convenient as I could use it whatever state I was in.

    MRB still works as is
Things like claw hammers, true bubble levels, and the current LVA coupon MRB are still useful and applicable in today's world. Everything we encounter doesn't have to change.

    I like it!
    I like the app idea.

  • Scott Feb-10-2024
    No problems
I've redeemed many a MRB coupon that I had already detached from the book at home for convenience....I've never been turned down and no one has ever even asked about where the book was.

    TWO BOOKS
Per another response here, I sure I hope I'm able to use the same (2) coupons from two books purchased this year. I also hope that, as a result of that purchase, I am entitled to get two, not one, Palms printouts.
If this is not so, I'll be picketing in front of the LVA Office all day February 30, and invite everyone inclined to join me.

  • Kenneth Mytinger Feb-10-2024
    Ditto to Scott
A couple years back, I showed my MRB to a friend at the Gold Coast club booth, so she could look through the coupons. The idea being that if she found something interesting, she would borrow my MRB.

Absolutely sure of this. She had no corrupt intentions. But she began tearing out a coupon from the book, and I went ballistic (no! no!); she had a kind of indifferent expression, tore out the coupon, and handed the book back to me.

So, did she know that it would be honored (maybe by friends or associates, or at another club booth)? Or, perhaps the LVA staff has been on top of this for a long time ...
