Question of the Day - 19 July 2024

Q:

Any updates on Mt Charleston Lodge rebuild since the fire?

A:

In an e-mail, Lodge manager Thomas Schneekloth wrote, “We're fielding tons of solicitation calls daily from contractors looking to bid for the job. Construction is planned for spring of 2025; we don't have an end date at this time. We're estimating 12-18 months once construction begins.”

Two days later, Schneekloth contacted us again to say, “Permitting is underway for the construction of the new lodge. We hope to have start dates soon. … We'll let everyone know when we might start booking events.”

Renderings of the resurrected lodge were released in March to KTNV-TV and can be seen here. Looking very much like the old lodge, they're the work of popular Las Vegas architect Paul Steelman's firm.

The original Lodge, very popular itself, burned down in the early hours of September 21, 2021, almost three years ago. Its cabins were preserved and are currently available for rental. The conflagration, which began in a storage room, was believed by investigators to have been an accident. Some residents don’t approve of the larger iteration though.

“We don’t want Las Vegas glitz and glamour,” one testified at a public hearing.

We’ll see how nostalgia and progress are balanced as the project moves forward.

A place to run screaming from Vegas
When I lived in Gambling Furnace, um, Las Vegas, we would take occasional day trips up to the mountain. There's water up there only in the spring, and overall, it's not a terrific place to have a picnic or a hike, but God knows, it's a relief from the blast furnace down below. We had dinner at the Lodge a few times, and it was very nice.

I think the whole area should be even further developed, but I can see why the existing residents might be opposed to that.

    Terrific Place For a Hike

Your negativity on full display once again, you just can’t help yourself. I am certain most hikers consider Mt. Charleston a wonderful place to hike. But the negativity does go along with your political persuasion, don’t you agree?!

    Ducks
I will always remember the Ducks in the pond. Does anyone remember the machine that dispensed Duck feed for a quarter? Also, John L. Smith warned about over developing the area, when he dissed the newly constructed 'traffic circle' up there.
