Question of the Day - 25 April 2023

Q:

We're bringing my new parents-in-law to Vegas for their first-ever visit. My blushing bride and I have been several times and we're disagreeing over the number-one must-see attraction. I say it's Bellagio's fountain show and she says it's Fremont Street Experience. What says Question of the Day?

A:

Well, it depends on who you ask and where you look.

In a poll we ran a number of years ago, the Bellagio fountains were the hands-down individual winner, with 29% of the vote. They're also the top attraction currently listed on TripAdvisor. On the other hand, they come in at number 24 on Yelp. (Yelp is suspect; its number-two attraction is Area15 and number-four is the Omega Mart, which it calls Meow Wolf, like referring to the Big Shot ride as Strat Tower or Atomic Saloon Show as Spiegelworld.)

A quick search of the Vegas must-see attractions didn't turn up Fremont Street Experience at the top of any of the lists. On both TripAdvisor and Yelp, it was number 5.

Also, a lot of the lists name places in general. For example, the top attraction on several are the "Las Vegas Strip." Duh. Touropia.com lists Bellagio, the whole joint, at number 2, so the fountains are just a part of that. Touropia lists FSE at number 6.

Some lists are little more than affiliate-payment generators. One list we looked at had one of the many escape rooms at number 3. Sure it is.

In the end, for peace in the new nuptials (congrats, by the way; here's to a long happy life together), let's make them both number one. For folks who've never been to Vegas before, the whole spectacle is the number-one attraction, so like a hologram, any part contains the whole image.

Besides, there'll be two judges. Your mother-in-law might find the fountains best, while your father-in-law might be most wowed by FSE. Show them everything and let them decide what's number one.

For our money, we'd take them to the Welcome sign first. Nothing says you've finally made it to Fabulous Las Vegas than Betty Willis' iconic photo op.

    Las Vegas Attraction
I by far prefer the Fremont Experience, the fountain is rather tame.

    Must See
I've been to the FSE once and really enjoyed it, but I've never been back. On the other hand, we never leave LV without a stop by the Bellagio's fountains and even more importantly the display in the Conservatory there.

    It Ain't Fremont
That area has turned into a slum. I took a visitor down there in 2019 and it felt like I was walking through a street market in Iraq. Dirty and dangerous.

    Must see.... damn
The any first time visitor it must be the Hoover Dam!

FSE is cool, but the sad buskers ruin it for me. I think the fountains

    Hoover Dam
Agree that Bellagio and that whole Strip area is a sight to get the classic flavor of what people think of as Las Vegas. Someone recently mentioned a "Flyover" attraction, which I suggest you check into.

But to balance it out, do a Hoover Dam tour. If you go in nice weather, consider the Hoover Dam Float Trip tour. Takes up all morning and half the afternoon, but well worth the time.

    Bellagio
    Bellagio, Bellagio, Bellagio!
First show them the tranquil Fountains. Then go inside and have them look up at Dale Chihuly’s over 1000 glass flowers-“Fiori di Como” in the lobby. Then take a walk through the beautiful Conservatory. Hands down, beats anything downtown has to offer!

    The Strip
Drive down the whole strip at night in a convertible. , They get an idea what Vegas is about . Maybe open top bus tour.

    FSE lost me
I used to love the FSE, but I don't care for most of the songs they play anymore. That has taken the urge away to go watch. I'm 70, but I'm still familiar with current music, having two teenage grandchilden. There is a lot I like, but unfortunely, not the ones FSE picks. I wish they would have kept one show for us baby boomers. Bellagio is still the top pick. The fountains, the lobby, the conservatory, the chocolate fountain and the casino itself.

    1st Timer Suggestions
It all depends upon what you and your family like, a few suggestions other than Bellagio and FSE, the High Roller Ferris Wheel is amazing at night, same with the top of the Strat, dinner is average, the view is what you pay for, also really like taking people to the Venetian, the Frescoes on the ceiling are spectacular and you can walk around the Grand Canal Shoppes and see the Gondolas in a really nice atmosphere. Have fun!

    My Top Group
    1. Bellagio. Have dinner at one of the places where you can sit outside and enjoy the fountains and some amazing cuisine. Then go to the conservatory, the lobby, and one of my favorite casinos.
    2. Fremont Street Experience. Early evening is best.
    3. Hoover Dam. On my last trip, I took a break from gambling and took a bus tour there. It was my first time at the dam in 51 years, when I was a teenager!
    4. High Roller. Do this first, to give the visitors an idea of what's where.
    5. Venetian/Palazzo. Impossible to navigate, but fun.
    6. Strat Tower. See it all.
    7. Wynn/Encore. Just to ogle the luxury shops.

    The comments say it all
There are so many things that are "Vegas" that it doesn't really matter. We used to make a list of things to do when we were in town. We never got to do all of them, but it gave us a start to the next year's list. Also, things change every year, so there are always new things to put on the list. To me, there is no number one must do or see. The LVA suggestion of "Show them everything " is just about right. Only there isn't enough time to see "everything". Just start showing them things. They may even spot something you've never done and ask about it. You may even find new things that YOU have never seen.

    RE: Susan Johnson
Agreed. I wish they had redone some of the original shows for the updated screen. There was a "Viva-Las Vegas" show that included a medley of Vegas headliners from the 50-60's. That was my favorite.

    #1 Start at WELCOME SIGN..
And DRIVE the entire Strip at night. That will be a great overview of every property INCLUDING the volcano and Bellagio fountains. FSE is an ABSOLUTE "pass" for anyone over 45 as I agree with "DwWashburn9". That place is like being in a dirty crowded mall with carnies all over the place hawking their "wares". #2 is Hoover Dam. #3 is Valley of Fire/Lake Mead loop.

    Pace yourself especially in summer
Lots of good ideas here for sightseeing in Las Vegas, especially for a first-time visitor. Plenty to see and do on and off the Strip. It can be a little overwhelming for those that have never been to Vegas. So watch for people in your group getting tired, take a break often and get something to drink, try to have some sightseeing indoors where you can sit for a few minutes even if it's just at a slot machine chair. As a tour guide you'll want to dazzle them with everything so they'll get the most of their vacation, but that can wear people down, especially older folks. Concentrate on the special things and if you have time and willingness from your friends then you can visit the secondary places. Most people will agree you can't cover everything on one trip that lasts a few days. Keep it exciting but don't make it a hard effort at fun, hopefully you can always go back for another visit.

    Different suggestion
I have a suggestion that no one else has mentioned and that's the Ethel M Chocolates cactus garden at the Ethel M factory in Henderson. You can tour both the factory and the beautiful garden in the same visit, and both are free.

Another suggestion is to buy them a good guide book about Las Vegas and give it to them to read ahead of time. That will allow them to read about the places they can see while in town, and they can make a list of the things that interest them most. That will allow you to avoid having to make all the decisions and ensure that you take them to what really interests them.

I hope all our suggestions help, and I hope all four of you have a wonderful time in Vegas!
