Question of the Day - 21 September 2017

Q:

The Neon Museum is a great tribute to the Vegas of old. With the addition of the Hard Rock guitar and other sizable signs, I wonder how much room exists for the Museum to continue to expand?

A:

Dawn Merritt of the Neon Museum says, “That’s a great question. We're looking to purchase some land right now, so we can continue our expansion, because we are running out of space." She adds, "We purchased the L.A. Street Market right next to us and tore it down,” giving the Museum a total of three acres, “so we have some additional space in there."

About the iconic 75-foot-tall guitar that decorated the Hard Rock Cafe for the past 27 years, John Katsilometes of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that the sign was owned by Young Electric Sign Company, which designed it, built it, and rented it to the Cafe. The hotel attempted to buy it, but could never finalize the deal. So YESCO donated it to the Neon Museum, which plans on refurbushing and displaying it by early next year.

Dawn provided a bit more information. "The Hard Rock guitar itself will go in the [existing] boneyard. We'll continue to fill up the available space until we run out of room. Then we'll put [the signage] into storage” in an off-site storage unit, “until we can continue to display the signs.”

    Already Full
"The Hard Rock guitar itself will go in the [existing] boneyard. We'll continue to fill up the available space until we run out of room."

The existing boneyard is already out of room. They have signs 3m 4 and more deep. So technically you can cram more in there but what's the point when you can't see a lot of them.

    Yesterday's question about renaming McCarran.
I just read yesterday's QoD. Since few read old comments, I'm putting my comment to yesterday's question here. Delete it if that's a problem.

State Senator Tick Segerblom (D) wants to rename McCarran Airport, because as Nevada's three Democratic Congresspersons wrote, "McCarran left a legacy of racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism." Segerblom wants to rename the airport after Harry Reid.

Some believe this renaming is political correctness run amok. However, renaming as perceptions of historical figures change over time or new information about them surfaces has been going on for solid reasons long before the political correctness vogue began.

But swapping one controversial, polarizing figure (McCarran) for another (Reid) is ridiculous. An airport name should not offend *anyone* who uses it. It should just be renamed Las Vegas International Airport. Boring, but acceptable to all.
