Question of the Day - 19 December 2023

Q:

Have you heard about a new show on Netflix called "Obliterated"? Even if you haven't, can you put your research team on finding out about it?

A:

Yes, we've heard about "Obliterated." It aired for the first time on November 30. The debut season consists of eight episodes, all of which were made available on Netflix on that Thursday a few weeks ago.

Categorized in the "action-comedy" genre, the plot revolves around a team of Special Forces agents tracking a terrorist group. After months of slow progress, they believe they've finally found and disarmed a bomb that could have blown up the city.

So they embark on a Vegas celebration, "a mushroom, ecstasy, and alcohol-infused blowout involving more dildos and chaos than anyone could have expected," in the words of one description. Problem is, at the height of the debauchery, the team is informed that the bomb they defused was just a decoy. Now, good and inebriated from all the booze and drugs, they have to continue their quest to save Las Vegas -- and their suddenly jeopardized careers.

Rotten Tomatoes called it a pick 'em, rating it 50% on the Tomatometer. Upwards of 300 Google reviewers were a bit more positive, an aggregate of 3.3 stars out of 5.

Here's one of the most positive: "The creators must have had a blast blending action, comedy, and suspense into this rollercoaster of entertainment. That combo was spot-on!"

Here's one of the least: "Even 1 star is highly overrating this sh* show of a GenZ series. OMG! The writers and directors need JAIL TIME!"

We like Variety's summation: a "baffling nearly unwatchable hodgepodge of nonsense."

Imagine that -- yet another horrible show about Vegas coming out of Hollywood.

We haven't seen it. We doubt we will. Have you? If so, tell us what you thought.

    Hard pass
With a recommendation like that, it's definitely not on our list of must see TV.

    it's awful
terrible but lots of Vegas scenes, the cast other than Princess from Walking Dead look familiar but aren't.

    Zero stars
I watched 7 1/2 episodes--all the way to the supposed climax. Then I reached toxic dosage, and had to quit.

This is a supposed satire on action/thriller movies, America's drug culture, and...dildos. It doesn't work. The premise is that a team of buff, attractive thirty-somethings, plus a couple of human mice thrown in for comic relief, are somehow America's most elite crisis response team and they're in Vegas to prevent various baddies from blowing the place up. Except--they prematurely celebrate their victory, get completely wasted, and find that the bomb's still out there. The rest of the episodes depict them stumbling, bumbling, and fumbling all over the desert.

The series relies HEAVILY on raunch and penis jokes. I mean, I don't mind raunch, but this was like pouring an entire bottle of ketchup on your french fries. I got the unmistakable feeling that the writers started waving dildos around when they ran out of ideas.

    Decent actors, but vomitworthy story.

I thought is was very entertaining. The shots of Vegas made it more enjoyable. I would recommend it. Who am I? Just an average gambler who has been to Vegas 25 times. :)
