Question of the Day - 03 September 2023

Q:

What is Nevada Day?

A:

Nevada Day is a state holiday that celebrates the Silver State's birthday, also known as Admissions Day. It commemorates Oct. 31, 1864, when Nevada was admitted into the Union as the 36th state.

It takes place on Oct. 31, which is also, of course, Halloween.

Except when Oct. 31 falls on a Sunday and the parade is held on the Saturday before, Nevada Day always occurs on Oct. 31 itself, Halloween notwithstanding. However, the official state holiday is held on the Friday before the 31st and public schools, state offices, and most banks are closed, though the post office and other federal offices aren’t.

In three northern Nevada counties (Douglas, Lyon, and Storey) and the capital district (Carson City), Halloween was actually moved to October 30 so as not to interfere with Nevada Day. But that ended in the year 2000; too confusing.

Carson City, the state capital, pulls out all the stops for Nevada Day; the celebration culminates in a huge parade.

Resort fees? Paid parking? 6:5 blackjack? An entire city being converted into a racetrack so some rich assholes can be amused for a weekend?

    Re: Keven Lewis's comment
Totally agree with Kevin's comment about the "racetrack." This F1 race is by far the most idiotic concept yet!

Here's a bit of Nevada statehood trivia:
Several hard copies of the Nevada state constitution sent overland and by sea to Washington had failed to arrive.
On 26 October 1864 the entire text of the document was sent by telegraph, in the form of a telegram from territorial governor James W. Nye to president Abraham Lincoln [1]. There was no direct link, so it had to be re-transmitted through Salt Lake City, Chicago, and Philadelphia. The final word count was 16,543 and it cost $4313.27 in 1864 dollars, which were still made of--or at least backed by--silver. And several telegraphists probably suffered carpal tunnel syndrome.

And I might agree with Kevin and others here on resort fees, 6-5 BJ, the F1 race, etc.; but these things are peripheral to the main QOD topic today. OTOH I'm hardly one to complain about digressions: I've digressed here myself more than once.

    Happy Nevada Day to all.

    Broke on Nevada Day
So, a year I did NOT spend the football season in LV, I flew into LV to meet some friends who were sports gamblers. I am not adverse to taping 30K to my body a la Miami Vice, but this trip I decide, since I have an account with Wells Fargo, to not carry a boatload of cash on me. I take a couple hundred bucks and need about 10k to gamble properly for the football weekend. I fly in Thursday night, figuring I'll hit the bank in the morning.

Well, I go to the bank, and it's closed. I am comically befuddled. I am told it is Nevada Day. Like, "What the goddamn is THAT?"

Thus, I am hosting a bunch of high rolling sports gamblers, and I HAVE NO CASH. My excuse, "Ummm, I didn't know it was Nevada Day," sounded pretty lame.

Thenceforward, I checked my calendar for the damnable Nevada Day.
