What is Nevada Day?
Nevada Day is a state holiday that celebrates the Silver State's birthday, also known as Admissions Day. It commemorates Oct. 31, 1864, when Nevada was admitted into the Union as the 36th state.
It takes place on Oct. 31, which is also, of course, Halloween.
Except when Oct. 31 falls on a Sunday and the parade is held on the Saturday before, Nevada Day always occurs on Oct. 31 itself, Halloween notwithstanding. However, the official state holiday is held on the Friday before the 31st and public schools, state offices, and most banks are closed, though the post office and other federal offices aren’t.
In three northern Nevada counties (Douglas, Lyon, and Storey) and the capital district (Carson City), Halloween was actually moved to October 30 so as not to interfere with Nevada Day. But that ended in the year 2000; too confusing.
Carson City, the state capital, pulls out all the stops for Nevada Day; the celebration culminates in a huge parade.
