Question of the Day - 18 July 2023

Q:

What percentage of the Nevada budget comes from gambling, hospitality and entertainment taxes?

A:

Nevada’s budget for 2024-2025 will be $11.6 billion.

in fiscal 2022, $964.5 million in gaming taxes were collected; in fiscal 2023, $971.2 million.

The live entertainment tax is a relatively minor donor: $91.3 million in fiscal 2020.

So are room taxes, which are mostly funneled to underwrite the operations of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

All these figures are dwarfed by sales taxes, which added up to $2 billion in the last fiscal year), as well as federal transfer-tax payments (also $2 billion and change).

According to a pie-chart breakdown by the Guinn Center (named after the late Gov. Kenny Guinn), only 18% of the state’s General Fund comes from gaming taxes. Live-entertainment taxes contribute 2.7% and lodging levies don’t even show up.

Entertainment and lodging sources of revenue for the state are dwarfed by a “non-financial business” impost (14.4%) and sales taxes, the biggest contributor at 29%.

Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Steve Sibelius once described Nevada’s consumption-based revenue model as “designed to fail in bad times.”

To put this in some sort of context, Nevada’s state and local governments spent $19.4 billion in fiscal 2022. That puts the Silver State toward the lower end of all the states, although nowhere near as low as thinly populated Wyoming’s $5.6 billion. The spending champion was California, budgeted at $510 billion in FY22. According to the federal Census Bureau, Nevada spent $8,675 per resident in fiscal 2020. The national average was $10,540.

Nevada’s biggest outlay was for elementary and secondary education ($1,665 per capita), followed by public welfare at $1,524 a head. These were well below national averages, with Nevada spending above-average amounts only on police, prisons, and roads and highways. The state also exceeds national averages in both general and selective sales taxes, the downside to a lack of personal or corporate income taxes.

    not bad
Sounds like Nevada has some control & discipline involved in their spending and better priorities vs CA which has some of the worst public schools in the nation last I looked, NV ranked better(!), have rampant homelessness, people leaving in droves. Where's all CA's $510 billion going to create a better living environment vs NV? Now if only NV would defund the woke public schools that are all around us that rank so horribly vs the rest of the world and privatize and allow school choice for parents, that would make it even sweeter.

    Well Doc H
You could move to Utah which has the #1 rank of all 50 states in education plus better health care. Which means if you are a MD and not just a PHD you would get better pay.

The trip from anywhere in Utah to Las Vegas for gambling is quite reasonable.

Even if Nevada made your education reforms into law, you and possibly your children will be dead and buried by then.

So how about it, tempted to relocate?

    Woke Doc
When I saw that Doc had volunteered his wisdom on the topic, before actually reading his post, I made a mental bet with myself that he would use the un-word "woke" at least once. I was not wrong. Woke. Woke woke woke. Woke woke woke woke woke. It has about as much actual meaning as a pig fart, but has nonetheless apparently become an indispensable part of the conservative vocabulary. Woke. Woke! Woke with sprinkles! And Fallopian!
Doc also gets conserva-credit for using "defund," which, as we all know, is a term frequently used by the Department of Defunse.
Doc supports "school choice for parents" without realizing how much harm was done to him when his parents chose to keep him home and force him to work the butter churn all day. Who knows how differently he might have turned out if he had been allowed to attend third grade!

(Cue jaunty music) Woke wokeity woke woke, woke woke (honk!).

    Once again
Something wrong with Lewis - all he can do is express disdain and hatred to all who don't agree with his twisted view of reality.

  • VegasVic Jul-18-2023
    Entertaining
Doc and David should form a comedy team. With matching tin foil hats. After/if they ever get out of grade school.

    Fair and Balanced?
Each of may agree or disagree with the comments Doc makes.

Likewise, each of us may agree or disagree with the comments Kevin Lewis makes.

I personally enjoy reading Kevin's comments because he has a better writing style and injects a bit of humor in the points he is making. His comments about sports betting the other day had me laughing out loud. Fourth graders placing Super Bowl bets with 5th grade bookies, and nuns betting on basketball games. My cousin got "the calling" when she was a teenager, and has been a nun for over 40 years. They do many good deeds, but they also know how to have fun, including going to the casino once in a while!!

    Schools
The problem with any class in any discipline is that the teacher is focused on the middle of the road. The remedial students get left behind and the advanced get bored and disenchanted. This also assumes the unionized teacher is actually any good.

A better model Would be that each student attends a class perfectly suited for their skill level. So while they may be advanced in math but behind in science they could attend a class that is appropriate. The teachers would then be more effective as they would be teaching at a level that fit everyone and not wasting time pandering to the outliers. This would also allow a much larger class size.

Using technology the teacher would have a wall of tablets each with the smiling face of a student. The student falls behind they join a different class perhaps in a different city/state etc. Someone is gifted they get bumped to a different class.

You weed out the bad teachers. You stop building single purpose infrastructure, etc.

    telling
Jackie, Utah is a beautiful state, but not our thing. Living in a moderate state largely where crooks from column A and column B keep an eye on each other is the best we can do these days I think. Have a supermajority in any party and look at the results in once nice cities like LA and SF is your reality, for those who choose to live without blinders.

It's amazing to see those who refuse, perhaps can't comprehend reality,I believe the former, and go off on their talking points on their political views vs looking at the reality that data shows clearly. I realize reality is tough to take but we are adults(?) here. But types like Lewis, with his TDS, orange man rants, woke-lib-dim anger, LV sucks talk from him, that's to be expected. I find it quite amusing how brainwashed and angry some people are frankly and refuse to analyze facts, instead act emotional. So be it.

As for Lewis interjecting 'humor' in his passive aggressive posts, well, blinders appear standard for some here.....

    woke def for Kev
'I was not wrong. Woke. Woke woke woke. Woke woke woke woke woke. It has about as much actual meaning as a pig fart, but has nonetheless apparently become an indispensable part of the conservative vocabulary. Woke. Woke! Woke with sprinkles!'

You need to educate yourself Lewis. Woke is a word that is defined in dictionaries and has been for some time. From the merriam-webster dictionary:

'politically liberal (as in matters of racial and social justice) especially in a way that is considered unreasonable or extreme'

As I've stated before: either one is ignorant of facts-reality or they choose to ignore them. I'm not sure what game Lewis is playing but it appears one or the other. Perhaps a side-effect of watching 'news'?

Next Lewis claims, denier fantasy talk: the moon walk was faked, never happened? Earth is flat? Or kevin lewis now argues that the merriam webster dictionary is a far right lunacy rag, wah, right winters own it, fake, fake I tell you!, LOL. Life of the brainwashed.

Take off the tin foil hat and get out of mom's basement. Fresh air clears the mind. No matter how small.

  • CLIFFORD Jul-18-2023
    DEFINITION?
WOKE...SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS ...From Merriam-Webster on-line. No mention of Liberalism or Trumpism

  • Walter Suttle Jul-18-2023
    Woke
As expected Doc only reported that part of the Woke definition that agreed with him. He completely ignored the first answer by Merriam-Webster Webster.
I define “woke” as compassionate and caring. Could care less how others define it.
The right, trumpers, conservatives , love to throw it out as insult, but I don’t receive it as such.
As for the original subject, it’s great that NV charges no income tax to its citizens, but to not charges business income or Corporate Tax. Just puts more burden on the little guy
    at the sales tax counter.

  • Doc H Jul-18-2023
    progress
Nice to see some of you who were confused what 'woke' is starting to educate yourselves. Lewis needed the most help as his rants that woke 'It has about as much actual meaning as a pig fart' needed help and I answered back to him.

Walter Shuttle: Woke in the context of what I grabbed from Meriam was the 'classic' woke used most of the time today so that's why I quoted it. Don't get angry because it doesn't fit your narrative that you state, I'm just the messenger here, talk to merriam. And you can believe 'woke' is wonderful, it's all good, we can agree to disagree. Though I'm guessing by your slant, being another team player of one of the crooked teams as far as I'm concerned, you probably believe the coke in the house of the eggplant fell from the sky and they can't trace it with all the security, cameras, etc. That kind of belief is a salesperson's, ooops, sales/they/them, gotta be woke, lol, love types who believe the pitch without questioning.

  • Doc H Jul-18-2023
    taxes
I agree with Walter on EVERYONE should pay their fair share of taxes, individuals, corporations. That includes a large % of individuals who were deemed 'don't make enough' who pay nothing in fed income tax after all the deductions, EIC, whatever. They use things like everyone else so they should pay something to support it, no one should pay nothing.

With that said, good luck with that ever changing. So many loopholes exist for corporations especially, the same people who champion team A or B of the political crooked coin spectrum, are the enablers every time they vote for either team as you are really voting for their donors who create these loopholes. I know this is a shock to the team players but reality is painful. Lots of you don't seem to get that.

As for Nevada not having state income tax, such states I find will nail people in other ways. Texas for example, check out their property taxes. It's a wash in the end.

    Woke tax
We can balance the federal budget! All we have to do is fine every conservitard $100 each time he uses the term "woke" to mean "something I don't like." Also: a $100,000 fine every time a conservitard politician uses the word to mean "something I can get people ginned up about and maybe they vote for me."

Woke woke woke belch grunt snort!

    Balancing the Budget
The budget will never be balanced as long as the "spend first" then "tax more" DemocRats are in charge of the government. Their method continues today....
