Question of the Day - 06 January 2021

Q:

What can you tell us about the proposed casino to be built across the road from the M?

And at the bottom of the answer is your link to the new poll on Vegas after the pandemic.

A:

We don’t know much at this point, as the project was just announced.

The land is at the northeast intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard South and St. Rose Parkway, across St. Rose from M Resort. The new casino is being developed by Anthony Marnell III, who also built the M, before being elbowed out by Penn National Gaming.

The planned casino would occupy nine currently fallow acres, appraised at $6.5 million. Marnell is getting the property from the city of Henderson for two-thirds that price, announced at "at least $4.3 million."

Why the discount? Nevada law OKs the sale of civic land at sub-market price when the purpose is to spur economic development, which the city believes a new casino in its rapidly expanding southwest will do.

But when is unknown. Marnell says he won't break ground for at least a year, not until the pandemic is "over."

When it is, will Las Vegas be more expensive, less expensive, or the same as it is now? You can vote for your choices in the new poll

    brings up a question!
Deke, what are the details on Marnell being elbowed out? Suggestion for a QoD! I have always liked the classiness that Marnell put in the M, and I am sure whatever he builds will be equally as classy!

Those who have expectations will always be disappointed
The pattern now is to raise gambling minimums while keeping room rates the same and keeping other things closed like shows, buffets, and days open during the week -- closed.

    Or just closed completely.

Afterwards, experimenting will take place in some of those areas while others like room rates will stay the same except for short term discounts to attract the out of State gambler.

So there will be some changes and some staying the same but bottom line they will make a profit, or sell the casino, enter one of the outside management deals, or just go belly up with bankruptcy. All of which will depend on the numbers of returning business.

What qualification does Anthony Marnell III have to build and run a casino, other than the fact that his father built the Rio? AM3 built M and then lost it a year or two later. He purchased Edgewater and Colorado Belle in Laughlin, ran them into the ground for 10 years, then sold them at a big loss. Rumor has it that the Belle is so dilapidated that the new owners are going to knock it down, rather than spending any money to fix it. It never reopened after the pandemic close in the spring.
