Question of the Day - 22 August 2024

Q:

When will the new Venetian Poker Room be opening? Will you be giving a full update on the facility and amenities? I’m very curious to see how the new location is received. My first reaction is that I prefer the old location better.

A:

The Venetian/Palazzo's new poker room opened on August 1, so it's three weeks new.

As noted in the question, the old location was in the Venetian casino next to the sports book and near a Strip entrance. The new room is far from there, all the way up on the second floor of the Grand Canal Shoppes.

At first blush, it sounds a lot less convenient, but it's close to the Palazzo's parking garage, so the in and out is much easier. Also, it's far away from the cigarette and cigar smoke of the casino, on which many players have commented favorably.

This poker room has always been one of the largest in Vegas and the new one is the largest: 14,000 square feet and featuring 50 tables. It offers its own restrooms that are, reportedly, the nicest in or near any poker room anywhere, numerous TVs, and USB charging ports at every seat; the self-serve soda machine and coffee station were relocated from the old room. Players can order food delivered tableside from Grand Lux Cafe. In addition, it's much closer to a variety of eateries in the mall than the old room.

Cash-game players earn $3 an hour in comps.

All in all from what we've heard, read, and watched (in some videos posted on opening day), the new room is going over very well with players. There has, predictably, been some grumbling about the new "scenery," but after the initial culture shock has worn off, we're betting that the poker world will flock to this room.

    Further questions
Do they still have the oversized drinks holders? Always used to be scared of knocking my beer over unless I wedged it in

Also - what's the drinks service like? Always used to a bit iffy and could go well over an hour between rounds

Caveat that I haven't been in there for a while so both of my points might be moot

    Where to start?
I have not played in a poker room for 20 years, and then only for a trip or two. I'd like to start back again. Are the games at Venetian out of my league (as a low stakes newbie?)

    I liked it
I just played a tournament there a couple of nights ago and I was pretty impressed. Other than being over cooled, like most all the poker rooms in town, I found it very comfortable. Drink service was fine, as were the cup holders. They also told me they validate parking for tournament players at least (that was what I specifically asked about) and I'll go back.

My suggestion for a low-stakes newbie would be to start with the limit games available at South Point or The Orleans until you're comfortable enough to move to the no limit games. For low buy in tournaments, Westgate has a small but friendly room, as does Poker Palace across town, though it has been years since I was there. PokerAtlas and Bravo Poker are websites with a lot of information on poker rooms and tournaments.

    Location
Most regular players that I know prefer that the poker room be located where there is a lot of “traffic.” They want people who would not specifically seek out poker to be walking by and think, “Hmmm, maybe I’ll give this a try,” much like they would do for roulette or blackjack. Those players are usually much more likely to contribute to the poker economy. 😉
