Question of the Day - 20 July 2024

Q:

Did anything ever happen on the LVA.com News page that people were complaining about in a QoD that asked for feedback last week?

A:
Indeed it did.

First, we fixed the horizontal scrolling issue. As far as we know, you won't have to turn your phones sideways to see the whole Vegas News page now. If you still do, please let us know in the comments or via an email.

To show you how complex these things are, the reason the text was a bit skewed was due to the default widths on the YouTube embeds in past News items, primarily our LVA Weekly YouTube updates. Our IT department added a patch to resize them on smaller screens, which has a knock-on effect to how the text is displayed.

The other issue was that Google Ads doesn't always pick up orientation changes for the News page. As an example, if you load the page in mobile portrait, you'll see a wide ad at the top by design. If you rotate your phone to landscape, Google is supposed to re-serve that ad space with a tall and narrow ad to the right, but it's not doing that correctly in all cases for all phones.

While we try to sort out the specifics of why this is happening and why it's only on the News page, IT forced the ad to be hidden behind the text when it gets too big. This shouldn't happen too frequently and a page refresh fixes this particular scenario, but we're working to eliminate it entirely.

Finally, IT made a number of tiny tweaks to cover a bunch of edge-case scenarios and have hopefully arrived at the best of the most worlds.

Another complaint we received was about the Top Ten. Previously, the comments on the Top Ten page were in chronological order from oldest to newest. Following the request to switch the order, we did so. Now, the newest comments are at the top and you don't have to scroll through years of feedback on deals that no longer exist.

Again, if anyone continues to have problems with the Vegas News page, please let us know with all alacrity. And we wouldn't mind hearing about it if those of you who were having problems no longer are.

    It does get complex
It was a whole lot easier to keep up when I was getting the print version of LVA's News of the Day delivered, but I can't get ahold of the delivery kid anymore, and his mom says he's off to college so I should join the 20th century already. I'm trying to read it online, but my wife seems to always be on the phone with her sister when I want to get online. What really has me puzzled is how rotating my phone would help at all, as it would just fall off the modem. Not complaining though, it's always worth the effort to get connected to LVA, and I'll work out my issues. It just does get complex sometimes.
