Curious about the behind the scenes operation of the NFR. Does the feed for the horses and stock animals have to be brought by the owners to the event? And what about daily cleanup? Is there a crew that does that or is it the owner’s responsibility? Counting horses and stock animals, how many are brought to the event?
Scott Dorenkamp of the National Finals Rodeo advises us as follows.
“The stock contractors (owners) of the bucking stock send in specific feed sheets for each animal that they bring. This feed is provided by the National Finals Rodeo as part of the stock being selected. They're given a choice of hay, grass, and grain. A crew headed by a livestock superintendent is employed to feed, water, and care for the animals throughout the time they're housed. Another crew cleans up the grounds as needed during the NFR and after its conclusion. Bedding is cleaned and provided as needed for all the animals.
“There are a total of 210 bucking horses, 100 bucking bulls, and approximately 180 head of cattle for the team roping, tie-down roping, and steer wrestling. The horses are also needed for the grand entry, the pickup men, and contestants’ horses. With all of these, there are between 500 and 600 head of livestock on the grounds during the 10 days of the NFR.”
The next National Finals Rodeo will be held at the Thomas & Mack Arena Dec. 5-14, 2024.
