Question of the Day - 18 October 2020

Q:

Is there a list of non-smoking casinos? I understand more casinos are opting into the no-smoking ban.

A:

There certainly is.

The American Non-Smokers' Rights Foundation has launched a project called SmokeFreeCasinos.org. It tracks all the casinos in the U.S. that are completely smoke-free.

The list contains nearly 1,000 U.S. casinos and other gaming venues with 100% smoke-free indoor-air policies. This number includes at least 167 U.S. gaming venues that have reopened since the shutdown smoke-free, either via a tribal or business policy or as part of state COVID-19 guidelines (NJ, PA, MI). The other 790-plus gaming venues were smoke-free prior to COVID-19.

You can find the complete list at this link. We can tell you before you click that you'll find three locations in Nevada besides Park MGM in Las Vegas: Aces and Ales Gastropubs and Gaming Bars (with three locations in Las Vegas) the Sand Dollar Lounge, also in Las Vegas, and the Nugget in Fernley (30 miles east of Reno).

    Park MGM too
Park MGM is on there too, under “State-regulated Gambling Facilities”.

    I hope...
in the future, to see a list of "casinos that still allow smoking," and for that list to be very short.

    Smoking rates are declining
A recent government report said that only about 15% of the US adult population smokes cigarettes/cigars. That's a lot less than 10 years ago but is still about 38 million people that have little regard for their own health and those they smoke around. It's remarkable that many casinos are still afraid of losing a minority of customers who smoke when there are so many more non-smoking customers. Old traditions are hard to change. It was difficult for the restaurant industry to go no-smoking but after a while it snowballed, aided by various states finally passing laws in that direction. Nevada should move on this issue and not leave it up to the individual casino owners to decide. It would be a big move by state legislators but something that is overdue. Nevada needs to get into the 21st century, it permits smoking in too many public spaces including casinos. Even in an "anything goes" kind of place like Las Vegas there should be sensible limits on bad or harmful behavior.

    It's weird
Although I did for several years, I would never eat again in a restaurant that allows smoking. But somehow sitting next to someone in a casino who is smoking is normal. As a child in the 70s many adults smoked now I think it is less than 1 in 6.

Angel of The Winds states it's a 100% smoke-free casino. Not listed. Arlington,WA.
The Tulalip casino in Marysville is tribal, but NOT smoke free.
