Question of the Day - 31 December 2021

Q:

Is the omicron variant having an impact on the New Year's Eve celebration in Las Vegas?

A:

Omicron variant? What omicron variant?

If the most contagious form of COVID-19 yet is putting a damper on the holidays in Las Vegas, you certainly can't tell by the crowds. Upwards of 300,000 people are predicted to be jamming the city this weekend and America's Party 2022, with fireworks by Grucci, has been in full swing most of the week.

The Strip will be shut down to all traffic at around 5 p.m. (only the Monorail will be operating), downtown is gearing up for wall-to-wall bodies, all the nightclubs are booked solid (with The Chainsmokers at XS, Zedd at Zouk, Rick Ross at Drais, and Steve Aoki at Omnia, to name just a few), and if you ask the average celebrants about the mask mandate, which is still in effect statewide, they say, "Mandate? Isn't that when two guys go out to dinner and a movie?"

On the other hand, the mask mandate could also be working to reinforce travelers' confidence.

On the other other hand, COVID cases are approaching record territory here. Yesterday, the county reported 2,366 positive tests, the largest single-day total in more than a year. And the trend line is only going up.

Actually, with other jurisdictions shutting down (L.A. is live-streaming its fireworks event like last year; New York City has limited the Times Square get-together to 25% of normal; Quebec's casinos have been closed for a week), Las Vegas is probably an even bigger party destination than ordinarily.

In short, pandemic-shmandemic, at least for the hordes here and still on their way.

    Party Now, Pay Later
Lots and lots of folks have decided to live their life as they want to and not let the coronavirus threat stop them from doing that. That attitude and behavior involves some risk, but their desire to do the things they want convinces them the risk is worth it. Time will tell how those decisions work out.

    Variant
For once you got it right. When this psyedopandemic variant started Jen Saki said it was pandemic The journalist from South Africa was T the press conference. He later was on tucker Carlson. He was trying to tell the idiot there were 4 cases in South Africa. Far from a pandemic. In some areas of country it is being treated as pandemic. Did you not see we had 500k cases in one day per our great CDC. That is a joke and a scam. Omicron should be a good road to herd immunity Symptoms are mild like a cold. The jab makers however do not want this. Does anyone know how much money BigPharma has made off the scam. Nigeria for example has 15 cases per million. We have 2200 per million. They use hydroxychloriquine Look at India. They use cocktail which includes ivermectin and chloroquine cocktail. Big Pharma and cdc will not allow this. I am still trying to find out what a case is. I am MD with major chem biology. More people are waking up.

    Hey Jerry
yep.. Omicron is milder than other variants for those who are VAXXED. You left out that little fact. Unvaxxed are still going to the ER at stupid levels. and it can KILL you if you're dumb enough to not have a shot. Nice try.

    Fools rush in
India!! The Delta variant came out of there! Pull your head out Patey!

What's the cost going to be?
As a direct result of tonight's big Vegas partaaaay, thousands of people will get sick. How many will die? Dozens? Hundreds?

It's obviously worth it, though, in order to maximize casino profits. Business as usual, and damn the ventilators!

The only way I can look at this is from a Darwinian perspective. If people want to voluntarily jump out of the gene pool...well, the next generation will be that much smarter. Party on, nimrods!

    Pandemic numbers
All the folks in sin city will be taking Omicron home with them, infecting planeloads all across the country. This run will totally overflow the hospitals as there is still about 38% of this country that doesn't care enough for either themselves, OR their families, to get the vaccine. It's pitiful and other countries are laughing at us while the poor medical workers BEG people to take the vaccines and give them a little break in fighting covid.

  • VegasROX Dec-31-2021
    Nigeria numbers ??
117.17 per 100K, those are the numbers being reported TODAY for Nigeria, a long way from MD Pateys claim. While nowhere closed to US numbers, it's a tad higher than he is reporting. Have no clue what source he might be using. I trust Johns Hopkins numbers.

    REALLY KL?
Stop blaming the casinos for opening their doors and running a business. They're not the only ones with open doors and crowds of people. It's a personal decision and the person making it is the one responsible if they get sick. Unfortunately they can make others sick who act responsibly. Too bad there's no way to prioritize hospital beds for those who get sick through no fault of their own!

Can you blame people at this point for going to LV and getting out?
Hey wait, thought Brandon was going to fix it all, you know, shut down the virus? All would be ok by the 4th of July, remember? 2 weeks to stop the spread back in what, 2020? Masks just for a few months? The "vaccine" would make it all good! As long as everyone is "vaccinated", everything will be fine the "Experts" tell us, like all those 100% vaccinated cruise ships that are now having major outbreaks. And the CDC announced the other day to now avoid cruises, "vaccinated" or not. More deaths in 2021 than 2020 from COVID.

So sure people, keep following your "experts" & "leaders" and do everything they say, as if they can control a virus and the masses believe them. Still. It sure has been working out so well(sarcasm mode, off).

Oh, & per CDC data;78% of people who have been hospitalized, needed a ventilator or died from Covid are overweight or obese. Imagine if people took personal responsibility for their weight/health how few hospitalizations and deaths we'd have from COVID?

    Have a safe New Year
Well, at least for the LVA crew, have a safe and happy new year.

    Garbage misinformation
To the administrators of this site: Please remove Jerry Patey's comment. It is one thing to have an unpopular or minority opinion, it is something else to repeat lies and information. Fortunately, nobody here appears to take him seriously, but he is adding nothing useful to the conversation. I'm not saying this site needs to vet all posts for validity, but that one is so outrageously inaccurate it should just be removed.

    new bars more $$$
Weren't oxygen bars a thing a while back? Bring on the ventilator bars! And like the hookah bars maybe you can share?

    Eric
The fine people at LVA I'm guessing would post a job opening for forum moderator if they needed your "we should censor this-that view!" one would think.

In case you haven't noticed, it has become obvious to me and many that the "experts" of all stripes have been wrong so many times with COVID, I can't keep up with it. The crowds we are seeing in LV now to me express that, people have had enough. This is a place to express a view as one see's fit & move on. We are all adults(?) and can follow up on what people post here and see what we think is valid or not for indeed, there are various agendas of all stripes out there these days. And the truth on just about anything is very hard to find these days, even from the "experts" many believe as the final word. $$$ and power often gets in the way, yes?

In any case, happy new year. And chill a bit, it's good for the immune system. I think all the people out and about enjoying Las Vegas now have it right. And yes, that's my opinion. :)

    Respectful disagreement with rokgpsman
I disagree with rokgpsman (Patey, of course, doesn't deserve any ink) who wrote,

"Lots and lots of folks have decided to live their life as they want to and not let the coronavirus threat stop them from doing that. That attitude and behavior involves some risk, but their desire to do the things they want convinces them the risk is worth it."

This gives the people flooding the Strip as we speak too much credit. I don't believe they have carefully weighed the benefits v.risks and come to a well-considered conclusion.

IMO, many are in psychological denial. Some are just stupid or don't see or read the news. I see them on the YouTube live streams of the Strip. Not exactly a convention of MENSA members.

Almost all are quite young. The young always feel invincible. (I did.) Catching or spreading a disease are the furthest things from their minds. It's time to PARTAY! That's all they're thinking about.

    MASKS
Is it mandatory to have to wear a mask all the time, and do you need to wear them in casinos
