Question of the Day - 12 March 2026

Q:

Has an Olympic event ever been held in Nevada? I know Squaw Valley/Lake Tahoe hosted the 1960 games, but were all the events held on the California side?

A:

You're right: All the events in the Winter Olympics of 1960 were held at Squaw Valley, which is on the California side of Lake Tahoe (and is now known as Palisades Tahoe, after rebranding in September 2021).

That was the closest any official Olympic event came to Nevada. However, some Nevada locations were directly involved as alternate or supporting sites. Some of the broader Olympic-related activities, celebrations, and infrastructure developments around the Tahoe area involved nearby communities, including Reno and Carson City. Reno served as the main hub for arrivals and housing for the 1960 games, the gateway city for athletes, officials, and spectators, providing lodging and transportation up to the lake.

Olympic torch relays have passed through Nevada on occasion. The 1984 Summer Olympics torch relay went through areas near Reno and Lake Tahoe-Nevada State Park. During the 1996 Summer Olympics torch relay, the flame traveled through Boulder City, Henderson, and Las Vegas.
