Question of the Day - 04 September 2021

Q:

I was wondering if I have a handicap parking placard for Michigan, will I be able to use it in my rental vehicle when I visit Las Vegas?

And

With most all casinos charging for parking, either self-park or valet, do any cut some slack for handicapped drivers?

A:

First answer: Yes, your Michigan handicap placard will be good here.

Nevada recognizes disability placards and plates from all other U.S. states, plus foreign ones, provided the credentials are valid and current and the person to whom they apply is traveling in the vehicle.

Second answer: However, handicapped credentials don’t exempt the vehicle from any applicable parking fees or meter payments; cars with handicapped placards pay the same rates as those without.

    Worked for me
On my last trip my Oregon place card worked and The D did not charge me to valet. I may have got lucky though.

    Mr.
I called Nevada to check about the handicap tags last year before I came out in October - as in most states I was told that with city, county and state government metered or paid parking you were exempt from having to pay the meter. With private parking like casinos that can vary. Downtown where the transit center city paid parking lot is - the sign says that handicap parking is not exempt. Whenever I displayed my GA handicap placard on my rental car mirror I did not pay and was never ticketed or towed. It always pays to ask first though to be sure - as it can vary.

    Surprised
I would have thought most of the casinos would extend free valet parking to handicapped patrons. In CA it's a virtual free parking pass (meter, valet, etc.), but then maybe that's why so many people seem to have them here too.
