Question of the Day - 01 February 2018

Q:

Your response to the Monorail extension question [QoD 1/10/18] stated that the parking fees have "arguably driven even more visitors and locals to seek alternatives." Is there any indication that the parking fees might be eliminated or reduced at those properties?

A:

In a word, no. We’ve seen no indication that the charges for parking at most Strip casinos will be rescinded sometime in the near or distant future.

It’s a simple matter of supply and demand. With a nearly 90% hotel-room occupancy rate and tens of millions of visitors, the big Strip casinos see as little reason to rescind parking fees as they do to reduce or eliminate resort fees, paper the city with discount coupons, go back to 3-2 blackjack, reinstitute $1.99 breakfasts, or make Jean Scott their casino mascot.

In fact, they’ve tightened their parking policies (locals pay now too) and even raised prices since paid parking was introduced. MGM just raised its prices across the board a few days ago; you can get the most up-to-date information on our parking-fees page.

Besides, the two most expensive propositions involved with the casinos charging for parking are already behind them: the gate and payment infrastructure and the public-relations fallout from their implementation. We doubt they’d relish going through all that again.

Now, we’re not saying that in a major downturn, the casinos might not raise the gates and allow free parking to incentivize visitation. But in this economy, we see zero indication of that happening anytime soon.

If anyone else does, we’re all ears.

    Free Again - No Way
There is no way a business that already has a license to "print money" would ever give up a revenue stream. I'm waiting for a registration fee to check-in to their hotel with a credit card.

    Typo: "major downtown"
Did you mean "major downturn" instead of "major downtown"?

I hate that corporations squeeze their clients like turnips for every drop of blood, but with all the venues, stadiums and arenas so close to the Strip, they pretty much had to do that because parking at the venues were charging for parking. Not a good excuse, but it is the reason it happened.

Pay to come & play at our casino? Really
We have been staying at locals casino's since paid parking was instituted. I still go & play at the Venetian since parking is still free, but refuse to give Caesars & mgm a dime just off principle. I actually like the value you get from some of the off strip casinos & if they start charging to park we will just stop coming. I see these big visitation numbers but I don't see the strip as busy as it was 10 years ago! I believe if things were going so well that they wouldn't have to charge for parking. If sports betting becomes legal nationwide, the Vegas casinos & state probably won't be getting any of my money anymore.

    Credit cards
Just get the no fee credit cards. One perk is free parking.
