Your response to the Monorail extension question [QoD 1/10/18] stated that the parking fees have "arguably driven even more visitors and locals to seek alternatives." Is there any indication that the parking fees might be eliminated or reduced at those properties?
In a word, no. We’ve seen no indication that the charges for parking at most Strip casinos will be rescinded sometime in the near or distant future.
It’s a simple matter of supply and demand. With a nearly 90% hotel-room occupancy rate and tens of millions of visitors, the big Strip casinos see as little reason to rescind parking fees as they do to reduce or eliminate resort fees, paper the city with discount coupons, go back to 3-2 blackjack, reinstitute $1.99 breakfasts, or make Jean Scott their casino mascot.
In fact, they’ve tightened their parking policies (locals pay now too) and even raised prices since paid parking was introduced. MGM just raised its prices across the board a few days ago; you can get the most up-to-date information on our parking-fees page.
Besides, the two most expensive propositions involved with the casinos charging for parking are already behind them: the gate and payment infrastructure and the public-relations fallout from their implementation. We doubt they’d relish going through all that again.
Now, we’re not saying that in a major downturn, the casinos might not raise the gates and allow free parking to incentivize visitation. But in this economy, we see zero indication of that happening anytime soon.
If anyone else does, we’re all ears.
