The two-part history of Helen Stewart and the Las Vegas Paiute was fun to read, but now I want to know the current info! Where is the ten-acre tract that the Las Vegas Paiute own located in the downtown area? Is it developed or empty?
The most visible part of the Las Vegas Paiute Colony is at 1225 N. Main Street, where the Tribal Smoke Shop has been for decades; next door is the Tribal Mini-Mart. According to the tribe, the Smoke Shop ranks as the largest single retailer of cigarettes in the United States.
The pair of stores fronts the 10 acres between Washington and Owens avenues, just north of downtown Las Vegas. The official address of the tribe is 1 Paiute Drive; Paiute Drive and Paiute Circle lead to the tribe's administrative, health and human services, police, child-development, education, and air-quality and Paiute Golf Resort offices, as well as the gleaming NuWu Cannabis Dispensary and Nevada's first marijuana tasting room.
Single- and double-wides provide housing for members of the tribe, which was recognized as a Sovereign Nation in 1934 through the Indian Reorganization Act and adopted its Constitution in 1970.
Through a 1983 Act of Congress, 4,000 acres came into Paiute possession at the Snow Mountain Reservation, 18 miles from the colony. Snow Mountain Golf Resort has the Pete Dye-designed 7,159-yard par-72 Nu-Wav Kai course with a golf shop and bar and grill.
The 29th Paiute Pow Wow took place over Memorial Day weekend at Snow Mountain, just off Exit 99 on US 95, a little north of Santa Fe Station. This annual event features dance and drum circles and contests, folklore and musical performances, and juried singing competitions.
On a couple different subjects, here's your link to the results of the last poll: What will never happen in Las Vegas?
And for those of you who'd like to see a five-minute video of the Luxor Nile boat-ride attraction, which we covered in a QoD on October 24, Jared Staehli from Akron, Ohio, a long-time Vegasphile and LVAer, dug out the one he took 25 years ago and graciously sent it to us to use. You get almost the whole (vicarious ) experience of a long-ago short-lived amenity. Thank you, Jared! What a great addition to the QoD archives.
