Question of the Day - 22 January 2019

Q:

Just got my 2019 Member Rewards Book. Very disappointed that the 50%-off coupon for the Palms is no longer included. This was the single most useful coupon in the book — it paid for my yearly membership! I used it every year! What happened to this coupon?

A:

The coupon good for a half-price discount up to $50 at the Palms simply wasn't renewed.

We weren't offered a specific explanation, but we suspect that after the nearly $700 million renovation and retooling of the Palms by Station Casinos, the coupon didn't fit in with the new business plan.

In addition, the number of Palms' amenities at which the coupon was accepted kept shrinking, so its overall value was somewhat reduced.

Members like you had a good long run with the $50-off deal; it began shortly after the Palms opened when then-owner George Maloof told us that he wanted the best coupon in the book.

The Palms is still represented with a 2-for-1 for its excellent A.Y.C.E. Buffet that's good for a $20 saving, so 40% of the lost value of the $50 discount was preserved.

Additionally, the $65 in free-play coupons, plus $40 more this year in gambling-coupon value than last, not to mention the 100 or so other coupons in the MRB will easily cover the cost of LVA membership many times over.

    GAAH!
Will everybody (commenters included) PLEASE learn how to spell a THREE. LETTER. WORD??

    "Its." The possessive form.
    "It's." A contraction.
Example: "It's a legend in its field."

Not difficult to understand, right? RIGHT????

    Thank you.

    Grammar
The easiest way to remember this is that "it's" means "it is".

It depends on what your definition if "is" is....
I used to correct people's apostrophe errors, but they had me outnumbered. They just don't teach this stuff in school any more, and it gets by the spell-checkers. Not worth a point on your blood pressure.

Palm is still a great deal
Grammatical comments aside, I agree that Palm's AYCE coupon alone is a very good deal. went to Palm's AYCE in December with the BOGO coupon and it was definitely worth the money, even if I had to pay full price. Going back to LV in March and the AYCE (and it's 2019 LVA coupon) is on my hit list.

I spent a career in marketing and know that times, trends and marketing objectives change. I can't fault the Palm If you see a good deal, take advantage of it while you can.

FYI Throughout this comment I purposely misspelled "Palms" as "Palm" and made the possessive "Palm's" instead of "Palms'". Hope that everyone's blood pressure is OK.

    short lived/long lived
Drives me nuts. I always pronounced it with a long i. But now I'm alone. I looked it up. Both pronunciations are acceptable. Grrr.

The $50 coupon at Palms was long lived, but now it has no life.

The other one is "I could care less." Grr. How did that get started? It makes no sense grammatically. It says that while one cares very little about something, there is still room to care. I'm sure the speaker means to state that it is not possible to care one iota, any less, about the topic, therefore he 'couldn't care less' which is the proper grammar. I'm right, I looked it up. Though one web site gave excuses for the use of "could care less", among them being satire.

I apologize for continuing the hijacking of this QOD for grammatical purposes. Blame it on Kevin. LOL.

    LOL
Every generation changes the English language somewhat. Ahh, I remember my old school days of dangling participals, run on sentences, and outlining a sentence. LOL, forgot every bit of it as it was never used in real life. That's the problem, if we don't use that education we collectively discard it for for something "more convenient". Only on legal documents should we ever concern ourselves with "proper" anything, otherwise, if the idea got across, we move own.

    QOD
    1. I agree with Jackie - I used to get all het up about proper usage. Then I discovered the much lamented World Wide Words and discovered that a lot of our rules were just attempts by 19th century grammarians to graft Latin rules onto English, even though much of English is not derived from Latin. As Jackie noted - the language is a living one, which makes it powerful.

Second - I linked here from the e-mail which said the QOD was about live Keno. Since I was one of those who submitted that question, I was interested in the answer, but I don't see it here, in the archives, or as tomorrow's question. I hope it hasn't been lost in the ether!

    Massage
I used the 50% off to get a massage at the great spa they used to have in the main building, near the pool. Got max value out of it. Had the same masseuse for years [Marissa - wish I knew where she went], but once they closed my friends and I use it at the buffet, so no great loss for us
