What's the latest at Paradise Park at the Wynn? Wasn't it supposed to be done by now?
The ambitious (and frequently altered) Paradise Park project, slated to replace the golf course behind the Wynn/Encore, has been abandoned.
The $1.6 billion "park," originally planned to include a 20-acre lagoon with water recreation, new hotel-casino complete with all the food, nightlife, and retail amenities, carousel, zipline, and fireworks, was scrapped a couple months ago in the wake of the departure of Steve Wynn from the company. Wynn himself had earlier dispensed with his own idea for an animatronic King Kong.
The first phase of Paradise Park, a convention center, is proceeding; it's scheduled for completion in January 2020.
As for the golf course (originally belonging to the Desert Inn, which Wynn purchased after Kirk Kerkorian wrested Mirage Resorts from his grasp), it will be restored, redesigned (with the help of architect Tom Fazio), and reopened before the convention center, sometime in the fourth quarter of next year.
Wynn Resorts CEO Matt Maddox told investors on a third-quarter earnings call, “We weren’t really interested in building a large public swimming pool for the Las Vegas Strip. So we just decided, ‘Let’s go with Phase 1.’ We know the convention center is going to work.”
