Question of the Day - 20 April 2022

Q:

We're looking for the best pastrami sandwich in Las Vegas. Where do you recommend?

A:

You'll find excellent pastrami (and corned beef) at Weiss Deli in Green Valley and Bagel Cafe on S. Buffalo Drive just south of Summerlin Parkway. Bagel Cafe also runs the Del Mar Deli at South Point; the sandwich at the Cafe is bigger and costs $15.69, while at South Point it's $9.95.

We also did a comparison of three pastrami sandwiches in the December 2021 issue of the Advisor: Binion's Deli, Saginaw's at Circa, and Siegel's (formerly Harrie's) Bagelmania on Convention Center Drive.

We were completely unimpressed with the pastrami at Binion's, even for the $10 price tag. So it was down to Saginaw's and Siegel's.

Saginaw’s sandwich is exceptional. The proper preparation of pastrami is spice-brine-smoke-steam, though most delis skimp on the smoking part, if they bother at all, so the actual wood-fired taste of Saginaw’s pastrami is a rare exception that proves the rule. The bread is authentic rye, comes with good homemade chips and a pickle ($20), and the service was, at least on our visit, lightning fast.

The pastrami sandwich at Siegel’s Bagelmania is $3 less expensive than the one at Saginaw's for a meatier sandwich on excellent double-baked rye. The pastrami is definitely barky like it’s been barbecued, but darned if it didn’t have even a hint of smoke flavor.

Bagelmania wins the size and price comparison, but Saginaw’s definitely wins for taste, which to us makes it worth the extra few bucks. The next time we're hankering for good pastrami, we'll definitely head back to Saginaw's.

Honorable Mention to Greenbergs Deli at NY-NY
    Best Pastrami on the Strip

    Address note
Google maps gives Weiss deli at 2744 N. Green Valley Parkway. The best chicken soup nationwide.

    Side note
Saginaw also has a very good cheese Blintz and solid Potatoe Pancake (Latke) I keep saying I will get out to the Bagel Cafe but have not done so. I love Blintzes and they are next to impossible to find where I live so Saginaw has made me happy with its many choices.

    Still the champ IMHO
I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me a Capriotti's Capastrami, or give me death!

I'm sure the pastrami sandwich at Circa is great but for $20, a sandwich should not just taste good; it should give me an orgasm.

    Pastrami
What about the Peppermill, or did it close?

Consider this in your next comparison
I thought the pastrami on marbled rye at the Vig Deli, in the M Resort was wonderful. It is a bit out of the way for many but I find it a great last stop to get a bite before heading down the I-15 to SoCal.

    Capriotti's
    Where is Capriotti's

    Gotta Try It
With two Capriottis near our house we've never tried their 'strami. Thanks to this edition, we'll be heading there within a few days!
I wish, however, the prices were rolled back some. I remember when a hefty corned beef or pastrami sandwich at our local NYC deli was $1.50 (and a hot dog or knish was a quarter). Yeah, I'm that old!

    Capriotti's
There are many Capriotti's sandwich shops scattered around the Las Vegas area. Google lists at least 30 of them so should be easy to find one not too far away. Good food and reasonable prices.

    Binions
Sorry to hear that Binions pastrami did not rate with you. Is the snack bar near the old (now closed) poker room still open? The pastrami there was the best I have ever had! Loved to grab one on rye - with potato salad and a pickle - before playing a poker tournament.
I hate fatty meat. Binions pastrami was the leanest I have ever eaten. Maybe that’s why I always made it a must-have whenever I was Downtown.
