Question of the Day - 05 October 2025

Q:
One of the best lines ever I heard was during a "Pawn Star" episode. Rick was getting married and Cory told him that he couldn't attend the wedding, but would be sure to make the next one. How about an update on how the pawn shop is doing now that the series has been canceled and the re-runs are on at 2 a.m.? Are tourists still lining up to buy the $50 T-shirts and stale bread? Was a very good reality show until Rick, Cory, and Chum became pedantic.
A:

This is a longer story than we have time or room for in a single QoD, but here are the Cliff Notes.

"Pawn Stars" is currently on an "indefinite hiatus" with the History Channel. In 2022, Rick Harrison, his son Corey, and Corey's long-time friend Austin "Chumlee" Russell started a new show, "Pawn Stars Do America," that lasted two seasons and logged 25 episodes. Rick Harrison and Chumlee launched the "Pawn Stars After Dark" podcast earlier this year, kind of a behind-the-scenes view of the show and store.

Rick has been dealing with family issues for many years. After his father Richard, who opened Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in 1989, passed away in 2018, Rick took full ownership of the operation, which caused bad blood between him and his mother Joanne. That culminated in Joanne filing a lawsuit, alleging Rick was siphoning assets and failing to provide a proper accounting of her 49% share of the pawn business. Harrison denied the accusations, maintaining that his mother was being manipulated by others for personal gain and that he'd been unsuccessful in his attemtps to contact her.

Then, in January 2024, Rick's son Adam Harrison died from an overdose of fentanyl.

Harrison has been married four times and appears to be headed for a fifth; in early March, he proposed to Angie Polushkin, who accepted. The wedding is planned for next year.

As for the pawn shop, from what we can tell, it's perhaps not as popular as it was in its heyday, but it's still going strong. The crowds outside have diminished a bit and the last time we stopped by a year or so ago, we could actually move around inside. But Harrison told Fox News that the store still attracts "around 1,200 visitors a day."

We can't say if tourists are buying $50 T-shirts, but Rick Harrison recently told News3LV that his business "is up year over year." He mentioned seeing more people from Europe, Mexico, and South America, but that Asian visitors are way down.

In the end, "Pawn Stars" survived for 23 seasons over 16 years, a long time for a TV show, and no doubt viewers still have a solid connection with it. So Las Vegas' Gold & Silver Pawn Shop should, it seems to us, be a popular attraction for some time to come.

    Great Show
That is a long run, good for them on their success. I know like most shows they are scripted to various degrees, but I always found the historical/information presented on various items brought in really fun to learn about. Plus the personalities/interactions were fun to observe though I'd bet it was lots of script and acting going on but who cares, it was well done.

On the 5x marriage? Yikes. Something to be said for truly getting to know someone before deciding on getting married or not but hey, his decision. If he was my friend, I'd say hey bud, chill a bit on the marriage thing, approach change needed as the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. :)

    Never again
I have visited 3+ times at the shop. Everything is way overpriced and Rick and/or any of the others seen on the show are never there. It is a complete waste of time.

    Happened to drive by yesterday
They had a small line outside the door, maybe 8 to 12 people.

Everyone needs a rental car sometimes
I on e rode on a fairly empty LAS airport rental car shuttle with Rick. I didn't attempt to speak to him but those that did didn't get any answer.

    Good show, crappy guy
It seems to me that Rick never intended to run his father's legitimate pawn shop. He pitched the idea of a show for years before getting picked up. The banter between him and his father and son seemed to tell me his father and son didnt have a high opinion of him. His mother sued him and 4 wives have left him. What does that say to his character?

    HA!
Maybe Rick just likes weddings, no matter how expensive they eventually become!

Rick will do ANYTHING for a buck, I’d put my money on the mom telling the truth. And the cheaply made t-shirts were $44.95 a few years ago. The store was actually ok before the show started.

    still there?
I wonder if "the beard of knowledge" guy is still around. Or the female who was an expert on books, 1st editions, things like that.

A friend and I went to the Pawn Shop, of course hoping to catch some of the ambience of the show. Early morning, they had just finished filming, but not a trace of it once let inside, no "stars" other than Antoine, the 'security' fellow was at the door.

    Meh
In all the years I've gone to Las Vegas since I resumed regular trips (2012), I've never been tempted to go to the shop. While I sometimes enjoyed the show, it was so scripted and fake that I just couldn't muster any enthusiasm for going there. I've worked in a pawn shop, so I know how they work.

    Sad story
No parent should lose a child. That's awful. And no husband should ever say "I do" more than two or three times, but that's a different story. I hope all of them fare better in the years ahead.
