Question of the Day - 17 February 2019

Q:

We will be visiting your beautiful city for the 41st time later this year. Due to a medical situation I need a wheelchair to get around. One of my caregivers on this trip will be my 20-year-old nephew. Is there a way that I can get a permit so he can sit with me in the sports books while I bet on the thoroughbreds?

A:

Sorry, but no.

The law is the law and absolutely immutable in this case.

“You have to be at least 21 years old in order to enter the gaming area of any casino in Nevada,” says Nevada Gaming Control Board Senior Research Analyst Michael Lawton.

Not only would your nephew get 86’d from the sports book (and gaming floor), the casino would risk being fined for having minors in a gambling area.

The only way to try to circumvent the law is for your nephew to try to pass for 21, but we're not suggesting it.

We wish you good luck in find another partner for visiting the race book.

    Online Sport Betting
Although it is not the same as going to the Sports Book, as long as you are in Nevada you can get a mobile account and bet from home with your nephew online.

    Underage in a casino
We took our kids to LV for our younger son's 21st birthday. Just a few hours before the clock struck midnight for his birthday, we stopped in a casino bar for refreshments. All the young people were carded, and although my son was only going to order a soft drink, we were politely asked to relocate to a nearby restaurant. They don't mess around.

    Good Luck
It sucks he can't just act as a runner, but they would card him immediately and you'd be out of luck. The only other thing is if you get an online account like DRF Bets or some other online racing app and wager while sitting to watch the races. I would bet your nephew doesn't get carded if he's inconspicuously sitting there with you, but he'd never get a wager in at the window, that's for sure.

    Mobile race books
Boogieman follow up / If you want to watch the tote boards live for changing odds, your nephew can leave you in the sportsbook & go back to room or wherever. Sportsbooks that have live mobile apps include Wynn, all Boyd & Stations locations, TI. You can watch live betting at Westgate, CG locations, S Pt locations & Golden Nugget-but would have to use the mobile app from the 1st four listed. Don't know about MGM or Caesars, don't use their apps for anything . .

    What's wrong with this picture?
Person in a wheelchair--has to be wheeled around by his nephew and can't afford a fulltime caregiver--wants to make sports bets. With what money, pray tell? Does this person receive government assistance? Disability? Medical care?

Of course, I know the answer. When I worked at a casino cage, the busiest day of the month was the 3rd, when everybody got their social security checks. Your tax dollars at work!
